New Year's Eve at the Kennel

New Year's Eve at the Kennel

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

New Year's Eve at the Kennel

dog chatter in the alleyways
mischievous canines
chewing the fat with each other
and gnawing on bones
thrown out the back door
of the cafe
beckoning them to trust

we are thrown bones
by the politicians
our chatter must get louder
barks of denial

faith in those who lead us
turns this dog agnostic

I believe in nothing
but, the next plate of food
left out for me to consume
like the lies of the owners
we elected,
just because they dangled treats
in front of our hopes and dreams

and then threw the box
to the fat cats
who swallow us whole
without chewing first.

Yep, I can feel this. I stand in the same alley though, I have lately walked right past the free lunch because it became evident that, like they say...there is no such thing as a free lunch. Very clever, loud, angry and right on Jacob.

Yes, no such thing...thank you for these words, will,

So easy to feel like a dog. Makes life less difficult. Do they write poetry? Anyway, thanks, J.

I have a book of poems by dogs...pretty funny...lots of famous poets writing from that perspective.<.. read more
Those dogs are really the worst of the worst of politicians!!! they'll eat any bone thrown to them and complain there wasn't enough meat on it....and "dogs" shall eat the next plate of food...the ones we elected....but the fat cats take it all......take us all...into the doldrums!
Great metaphors J.

I love so much about this poem, the dogs chewing fat with each other, the treats that are dangled before us, and the end line “who swallow us whole without chewing first” A great timely poem!

I assume there might be a cup of coolaid to wash it all down. :)

Nice one, J.

I hope it is not poisoned coolaid...
thank you, Relic,

Interesting comparisons
Even in this foreign (to you) back alley, thrown bones are steadily losing their taste, which could mean change, hopefully for the better, come election day.
In your back alleys, I see a few states are hopefully trying to restrict who will be legally able to dangle treats.
Finger's crossed!

Yes, a lot more barking, especially at the ballot box. Another year, another line of liars looking for support. ~Jim

He who puts trust in man is "cursed' according to scripture. From what I've seen and experienced in life I must say I wholeheartedly agree. I'm also of the opinion that the left wing and the right wing belong to the same bird and it's not an eagle. It's a vulture, feeding on the decimated carrion of the citizenry.
