Regrets Licking their Lips

Regrets Licking their Lips

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Regrets Licking their Lips

a French kiss

the back seat

becomes the bed of teenage mysteries

explored

the radio playing those sixties tunes

Those are in English

the languages exchange tongues

fingers explore

over, under, inside the unknown

the car radio, D.J. whispers the time

attire is quickly adjusted

the bed made,

tires squeal

homeward bound fingers

squeeze the wheel

the almost

will almost

but never be forgotten

Thank God we didn't

or blame God that we didn't

Catholic curse

fingers folded

as the penance is distributed

contrition contrived

the back seat waits

for the next Friday night.

Key word there, andrew,

Awkward....yes.
Jacob,
In my case, it WAS, in fact my father's 64 Olds 98... a great maroon schooner whose bow needed a rail like on the Titanic, the trunk wide enough for a king size mattress you wouldn't need because the back seat was a sofa!
(Actually, Denise and I were small enough that the Austin Healy Sprite sufficed on occasion...

Close to mine...Dad's 1969 Oldsmobile Delta 88.
Big cars, no buckets, just seats across.

we are all haunted by something...thank you, JD,
j.
Hormones high, micheavos teens experimenting, cups knocking, priests frowning, tires screeching, all bring back memories to the writer in vivid details.
I love it!

The penance and the sin and the circle of coming back for forgiveness we probably really never needed. Nicely done. ~Jim

"Contrition contrived." Love that line. There was a time when it was necessary to balance social life (and all it entailed) and religion, whatever your faith might have been. lI don't know what it's like now. Maybe they have to confess not using condoms.

The ultimate form of Catholic rebellion…….but also a teenage rite of passage. I never did the “backseat” thing but I certainly knew of some girls who did. Sometimes even the a strict Catholic upbringing is no match for our raging teenage hormones. Thank God for that radio DJ, indeed! The consequences could have been delightful but catastrophic as well. Despite the close call the backseat still beckons for the following weekend. Heady days of youth and a poem very much enjoyed.

Yes, the upbringing VS. the hormones...
The main event.
thank you, Izabella,

Not much difference from your side of the pond to this when it comes to the back seat car memories of our youth. Of course this poem made me smile and think of something else. Steamy Windows:)
