Shamu Splash...

Shamu Splash...

A Poem by Frieda P

"
Pressure in Shamu's honor
   activists gathered round to wail,
Blackfish dug deep into hearts
sunk in swimmingly on orca's behalf,
collectively,
we can make a splash of an impact

Great write, I don't support animals being bred in captivity, farming aside, but not for entertainment.
The unfortunate thing is that many of these animals that were born in captivity were born of parents that were rescued. Which I do support, so then if you took those animals that were rescued and tried to integrate them back in everything would be hunky dory but the problem is sometimes they can't go back and they would die if they did. Then breeding occurs as a natural life event. But then you can't put these babies back in the ocean either cuz they'd die. So the best solution seems to be neuter the creatures, but I'm not sure what the effects of this are on the disposition of the creatures, and then of course... It would be bad for business. Sorry for rambling on Frieda. I'm on my third cup of coffee already!!! I love this little write though because I think we really need to find the right balance between saving the planet and letting nature run it's course. Good morning btw, :D

Thanks for pointing this out, and bringing us to this movie. Yes, a controversy for sure. We have our own aquarium issues this side of the border, which are different, but the questions must be asked.

One of your best poems Frieda, hope you don't mind if I save to my favorites over and over again... as humans we have a deep curiosity about the world around us, including all its inhabitants and of all it's inhabitants, we humans are the only ones that can extinct us all into oblivion.... when will we leaqrn that as its only consciously developed species, we have a responsibility to leave the world in better shape than when we came into it??? Caretakers is much different than owners.. we have no moral right nor legal right to capture, overkill, cage, or in anyway subject other species to this kind of "entertainment" or containment...

your poem shines a light on a horror that threatens not only Orcas, but all all life because the outlook and philosophy behind such outrages is one that needs a total revamp... so Frieda, great poem and thanks for standing up for not lessor species, but an important part of all of us...

You never require an excess of lines to make your point Mrs.R, and you have certainly said much in a small piece here...it's a sticky situation...these whales are beautiful creatures, and naturally many of us (myself included) enjoy having the opportunity to see and experience them up close, but I certainly don't want them to be held against their will and forced to follow orders for entertainment's sake either...this is an eloquently-penned statement that conveys the clash of those two mindsets...I'm at a loss for words at this point and an unsure what else to say...I've never seen one of these performances up close, but clearly things are amiss when an outcry of this magnitude is generated...I've never bought into the notion of humans being the dominant species on the planet...I've never believed it, and still don't to this day...I can only hope that we clue into that someday...this is one of your more thoughtful pieces, and the latest example of how you can take any topic and make it your own...well-said, and of course well-written as always my friend...xo

More of a dolphin obsession myself but with a point so well made by Ana it would only seem redundant to add anyting along those lines other than I agree. On a different side of things great to see you bringing awarness with a touch of humour and a well condensed offering.

Thankyou

Oh me too, love dolphins...but same plight. Thanks so much Rene.
Yes, it is a sad story. What is so ironic is that the Parrot Jungle, the Monkey Jungle, and the Seaquarium have been huge attractions here in South Florida since I was a little girl. I have been to all of them and enjoyed them....never worried about the animals. Now, though, the media campaign is shining light on what truly happens to the animals. Lydi**

Good point you made. I'm not bothered, actually, about animals in captivity. Prefer them there. Which is funny, really, as I am not one of those people who likes animals in the house-too dirty for me. LOL. What can I say? Urban bird here!
