Closed Lid Sun

Closed Lid Sun

A Poem by Travis Lawrence
"

I closed my eyes and started at the sun

"

Eye limbs stretch from each grass root

lain and reached on a grassy green lawn

for the sun’s lights.

Stare directly at the sun,

sight with closed eyes,

to turn the black to red

to yellow to orange to light,

scattered blue dots

in a sequence of science

proven spectrums,

a psychedelic’s dream

colors switch direction

here more than eyes open.

The sun’s circle points and pierces

through each lid like a shine,

a full moon, penetrates the broken clouds

far closer but unseen in front

of when I hear the 2 a.m. coyotes howl.

Turn over and lie back side,

straightened flat.

The rays of light hold me

and kiss my skin with tan lips,

stick and keep me from loneliness.

Tight shut eyes will sleep

inside this comfort of color,

of warmth and a kind

love I’ve never known

other than the mid-day sun.

But every night

the rays' sight runs out of light,

I sleep and sigh and dream and hold

alone.

I don't know if there are coyotes in Texas or not, but I'm assuming there are. I've never heard one howl before though, personally. mm tanned lips, I'd hate to see the sunburn on the rest of the body then if even the lips are tanned.

an exceptionally strong finish in this one, especially saying how the rays run out of light. that would be a frightening day, but maybe the insomniacs can finally get some sleep with the absence of the sun.

Hey. This is good. I notice that you make a small science reference in some of your poems. I like it.
Thanks for sharing!

Whatever you write, Travis, always reveals a poetic tapestry of brilliance! You simply shine!

This poem seems happy if you pay more attention to the beginning than the end, but really there's underlying sadness laced into the words forming the lines that seem happy.. Only to be truly shown at the end. Or atleast that's how my mind processes it. I really liked it.

Oh my, you turned this poem about the sun's 'proven spectrums'
into something of a longing for love piece
'Love I've never known, other than the midday sun.'
and then the ending when you are ultimately 'alone'
I feel some def longing and pain here, well done
