A Poem by MCS
"

Monday marks one year since the first case of the virus that causes COVID-19 was confirmed in Canada, in a patient who came to Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital after returning from Wuhan, China.

"

Bleak news day in and out

Lite candles for those now gone

Prayer beads counted for those in ICU

Mayhem in the streets as anti-maskers rage on

Lockdowns, press briefings, droning of talking heads

Everyday the numbers are appalling

Economies gutted, unemployment soaring

Politicians posturing adding to the chaos

A year into this crisis….

Mary, your somber poem deftly expresses the losses, the hatred, the rise and fall of what has become of us... how can this have happened I ask myself multiple times a day. And yet it has and still it continues... The Grim Reaper in your frightening photo speaks millions of silent, tragic words-one for every heart stilled by this heinous disease that fouls our air more and more. One year in the life-yes. Beautiful, elegant, profound and important poem my friend. Thank you for your voice.

Your poem brings out my deepest fears without mentioning the possibility that vaccines won't be sufficient . . . maybe they won't be developed as fast as new strains develop . . . not to mention other unrelated viruses that pop up more & more in our over-sanitized & antibiotic-crazed world. We act so smug & "in control" but nobody really knows what's happening & what's to come with germs & viruses. I especially love how you include all the ways this is killing people (not just death) (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

As Christine said the UK cases/deaths have been at their highest in recent weeks, this coinciding with the mutant strains being contracted. Hopefully with vaccines now being administered the figure will start to fall.
Has been a s****y year

Hello Gee, thank you for reading and sharing. You are so right it has been a year like no other.
All our hope is now with vaccines. The death toll in the UK is horrendous. We have all had a year of fear and worry, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. What a long year it has been. Saddest for many a long year.

Have not heard the Canadian death toll, but in the US the number of dead is greater than the number of those killed in WW2. A bloody awful year it was, and the end is not yet. But we will beat this thing.

John, up here we are also in a mess our numbers are less simply because we have less population.
