Waiting For The Snow

Waiting For The Snow

A Poem by Kathy Van Kurin

Young child wonder in winter but its me doing it.

Waiting for the snow

Awake in the night holding out hope for its joy. It happens so seldom this silvery white rapturous treat. I am like a little child awaiting a sweet.   Three in the morning, Am I crazy? Yes, probably am. If it comes, won’t last long and be over by ten.

Around here Roads will be a crazy place. People are not use to the snow. Minutes click by and my eyelids cry out: We are so tired of your silly ways!  “Let us close!”

But I went on a walk an hour ago midst pure cold, fair.  An inner song wants to play.  I’m hoping for snowflakes; flying, drifting- silvery there.  Grown up eyes need to see snow fairies work their beauties rare.

Again to the window and turned on outside light, Oh Look! In the wee hours, flying white cuties bring a smile. Out the door to check on the weather as if it would happen any faster you see?  A good thing too, for my car window was open a slit.  Fortunately I closed it snug till morning light.

I know it’s not Christmas when the carols all say but any time in winter works fine for me. So Ring happy bells and do not forget to find happiness and dance any way that we can.

Dear chocolate brown spaniel, named Violet lies quietly throughout all of this chaos while night swaddles my house. she watches with one dozing eye, as I run about like a mouse. So what do you think? Should I turn off the light, lay me down to sleep?  Morning light will come. What will be, of course can wait. I am a adult after all and this behavior is nuts. Go to bed, go to sleep. What did my mother say when myself and four brothers and sisters were all growing up?

“You’ll know there is snow in the morning by its light.”

Our first Snow this year was in January 2022... I was Charmed at six am one morning when extraordinary larger than Life Snowflakes came floating down and in a couple of hours... there were Billows of Snowflakes as far as your Eye could See. Before Noon our Neighbor across the Road brought his Son (home from Military Academy) to Remove Snow from our Car and our Sidewalk. You could have Blown us over with a Feather. How can We thank someone who gives so much to Others. generously, Pat

Your inner child is speaking to you. I can remember the excitement that a flurry of snowflakes can bring, or to wake in the morning to a world of whiteness. This is beautifully descriptive writing Kathy. Your lines opened up my memory bank and I became a child again too. Visual and lovely work.
