Deer Gift

Deer Gift

A Story by Kathy Van Kurin
"

While sitting in a natural place of solitude a beautiful full grown doe came along.

"

Deer gift

In solitude my soul sought refuge under pinwheel clouds of grey.

Could I of known, Could I of guessed what I would see today?

Upon bank of gravel spread wide and long appeared a creamy tan vision from edge of my periphery.

Along pathway of railroad track she, a full grown doe progressed in her own unique four hoofed gait.

Beyond fence of cottonwood trees camouflaged I sat wide eyed. Do I dare move?

I thought, ‘It is like an

apparition.’ Onward a gift, onward each smooth step.

Through graceful progress time succumbed to her

presence till out of sight engulfed in nature’s emerald greenery.

The wonder of this special occasion ticked on in

gems each second shining.

I sigh as she is absorbed by tree Trunks, leaves, and limbs canopy. Then disappears like a

balloon drifting away.

Nearby ivy patch trembles in summer breeze and I as well. To be allowed this witness from one person vantage point.

Did I really see her at all? I don’t want to forget!

Such grace, such strength she carried in smooth progress. Walking uneven path she found her way.

While both steep sides of track sloped in unstable gravel to surrounding boggy woods.

I wondered, “Why and  how dear doe came to travel in such a way.”

It seemed a mystery. Was she lost, deserted by her herd, or just hungry?

As humanity encroaches wild life is still

real at edge of modern day reality.

The earth lives on and sometimes we are allowed a glimpse of its wonder!

It always feels like I've stepped into a Disney movie when a wild deer appears. In the past, that happened a lot where I used to live, and if I'm lucky, it may still happen. As of now, I'm happily feeding birds and squirrels. That in itself is rewarding. Still, is there anything more magical than witnessing a deer, seemingly out of nowhere, grace us with their presence? This was a wonderful poem to read :)

I can relate to your wonderful poem and experience. Where I live in rural Alabama, by a lake, I encounter many a deer enjoying the woods and their family.
I see many other wonderful creatures.
You can't help but enjoy and praise the Almighty.
I love your descriptions.

I do. Good to see you. You are welcome Kathy.
We live near a park and every day I am given a gift of a hawk, a kite, a deer or some glimpse of nature’s complexity. To be allowed to witness something we have become so removed from is a momentary hint of the joy of living in the moment.

Where I live. Once was great forest in Michigan. You can see the lost deer in the city parks. They wandered into the city in the night and it is sad. So many cars. I enjoyed the feel of mystery and your thoughts. Thank you dear Kathy for sharing the amazing poetry.

Your delight and wonder are plain to see in this piece, Kathy. Nature has many fine things to show us, and when we get our own personal viewing it does indeed seem special! It must have seemed almost mystical!
