The N****r Word.

The N****r Word.

A Poem by Thomas Fitzgerald
"

A challenge to those that still think it appropriate to use this foul word of hate and oppression.

"

A blast of hatred of acid tongues,

A needless phrase to scold the tall,
A forgotten hero they never mention,
Take a look at the one called Robert Smalls.

A swipe by fist of foul means,
A dangerous concoction of sparks,
A cowards language of sorts,
Take a look at the one called Rosa Parks.

A definition of weakness in ruling,
A slap in the face of the now free,
A collapsed cult now gone forever,,
Take a look at the one called Isabella Baumfree.

A word is a word to fight and hurt,
A sentence pinned together from fools,
A paragraph of silence descends upon you,
The N word no longer a relevant tool.

I agree with you completely Thomas people's minds need to be changed, they look at one thing and characterize all black people which isn't fair. Your poem was amazing, and I liked how you said "Take a look at the one called..." This is my all-time favorite poem by you. The N word is no longer a reverent tool. OUTSTANDING!!

Words can scar a place and a situation. The world have found someone or some people to hate. In the history of this world. Separation because of color and religion had create hate that can't be forgotten. Funny part of life. Life should be simple. Treat people like you want to be treated. The N word is spoken often here in Detroit. People who understand the words. Use the word with a different purpose. I won't use the word. For to me. Nothing good to say. Say nothing. A powerful poem. You made me think again.

a well composed and thoughtful poem..and will much passion..I will always hold though that it is just a word and it is more important to know oneself than let mere words control our state of minds..I have been married to a black man for 16 years..he is totally comfortable with who he is ..black is a state of mind..the colour of skin should not determine the person you are..

I actually hear the word "n****r" from more black people than white people and I live in the southern United States. On television and in popular music it is quite often spoken but always by blacks and never by whites. I am a writer so there are no "bad" words to me. There are only bad people who use words to try to intimidate, belittle, insult or dehumanize others. The word (in its context there) gets its base from the Bible I believe and the mispronunciation of the word Niger..(long i) by some illiterate evangelist along the way. The great irony in this is that the word niger is an African word and means "black". There is a country Niger, a river Niger and a country called Nigeria which all have the same base word meaning... black. My daughter has a friend who was born in east Africa and was raised there until the age of 19 when she came to the United States and began her college studies here. She is now an American citizen. I submit that she has more of a right to be called an "African American" than someone who has never even SEEN the continent... the irony there being that she is white, blond haired and blue-eyed. Ignorance is the cohort of prejudice but prejudice stems from every culture equally just as ignorance does. To attack a "word" for the ignorance and prejudice of those who use it in a disrepectful context is nothing more than censorship. And who gets to pick the "good" and the "bad" words? The censors of course! Be careful what you wish or you may find your hands tied with your own rope and your mouth duct-taped shut by the faithful sheeple who follow every piece of propaganda spilled from the mouths of idiots.

A most beautiful and moving piece, Thomas.
Great symmetry in the structure and rhyme, but for me it's the message that makes this an instant Classic.

Outstanding. Thank You!
