I was driving down one of the many dirt roads on the way to my dad’s house recently. He lives about 28 miles away and I usually speed on the dirt roads since I love to see all the dust in my rear view mirror!
I suddenly heard a loud bang! coming from the front of my sports car. I knew I had hit something and I felt awful at the thought. I nearly drove away, but for whatever reason, I stopped the car and got out to look at a poor dead cat lying in the center of the road. Again, I nearly decided to get back in the car and drive off, but I decided that this poor cat belonged to someone and it must be my duty to find out and give someone the bad news no matter how long that it might take.
The very first home that I came to was the home of an older woman. She seemed very kindly and sweet upon opening the door which made me giving her this news even worse.
“Can I help you young man?” She asked with a smile.
“Yes, I hope so.’ I responded hesitantly. “Do you own a cat?”
“A cat?” She asked thoughtfully.
“Yes, a cat. I unfortunately just hit an adult cat on the road back a ways and I was wondering if perhaps if might be yours?” I became a bit annoyed when she didn’t seem to know whether the cat could have been hers or not!
“What did the cat look like young man?” She asked almost too patiently.
I am a bit of a smart alec so the rest of the conversation turn a strange turn.
“Well, it looked like this….” While keeping a straight face I made wild motions with my arms and hips as if I was trying to simulate getting the attention of a driver right before getting hit.
“Oh no! No! You terrible, terrible man! I didn’t mean what the cat looked like before getting hit. What does the poor animal look like now?”
“Right now? What does the cat look like right now?” I asked rather innocently. “Well he looks like this.” I then threw myself on the steps of her entry way while rolling around moaning and finally laying dead still.
