Stupidity

Stupidity

A Poem by Louisa Chan

Peace

Peace of mind

The more you own

The less you have

Possessions aren’t part of your assets

They are your greatest liabilities

Liabilities: greed’s greatest friend

Stupidity: greed’s greatest ally

Peace nourishes the mind;

Greed devours it

Stupid possessions are paid by an empty mind and a heavy heart

Five tablets of Xanax gives me peace -

A peace that comes with a hefty price;

The price to pay for a worldly life

To find true liberation one must be willing to let go of all things physical personal value. Objects that can not love back. We cling to worth because of the monetary profit it brings to life's stability. But what we lose is a sense of adventure and evolution. To fly without a net to fall upon. To love unbound knowing the possible consequences of choice. Heirlooms are reminders of a past life; not one currently lived. Brave are the painters and poets who take a chance stepping into the unknown with the first paint stroke and word written. Knowing full well it reveals themselves to a judgmental world. Yet they are truly liberated. One can live a life mundane clinging to such false securities. But what the loss is to never know your potential and full capabilities that reside within you. As well as the opportunity to live a life unforgettable. I enjoyed your profoundly existential poem. Thank you for sharing your work with us.

Joy is even better than peace. And joy can come from work as well as a sense of accomplishment and a means to provide for the necessities of life. Thoreau said, "All men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to be." I believe we need to occupy ourselves with worthy and innocent endeavors beneficial to ourselves and others. A professor friend of mine who was dying from cancer once said to me, "What are we good for if we can't help one another in this life?" It's a most relevant question. But for all this accumulation of wealth and toys and stuff, I have very little use. But the making of friends and the chance to help someone, you can count me in on that endeavor. I was reminded of these lyrics in a song from the seventies. On a side note, I found some joy today building a flower garden for my wife. My little girl went out tonight and came back in giddy with joy at seeing the little stained glass solar lights I had put up in the garden. It made my work worthwhile to see her smile. I'm looking forward now to putting in some more flowers. I love beauty everywhere I can find it. Bless.

"Not enough caring
Too many lies
Sooner or later
One too many goodbyes
I got no reason
For hanging around
When all my possessions
Start to weighing me down
But too much love, I've never known
Too much love, I need some of my own
But too much love, I've never seen
Too much love, I don't know what it means" David Gates
