The Parting Glass

The Parting Glass

A Poem by Scott H.
"

In honour of leavetakings and past times with good company. Based on an old Irish drinking song.

"

"The Parting Glass"

We come to it

At last, my friends -

Our time together

At it's end.

We've shared frustration,

Joys and tears

Over the course

Of these four years,

Making our way

Through rain and snow

Burning bridges

As we'd go.

So share with me

This parting glass -

To you, my friends,

Each one shall pass

To take a shard,

To prick the skin,

Let a drop of blood

Fall in.

Then we shall drink,

Create our bond -

And bid these days

No more, anon.

And if you should

Have thought of me,

Look to the moon

And set it free.

It will be carried,

Near or far,

To find me where

My fortunes are.

Perfect iambic meter makes this one flow just well as the drink in an old Irish pub! Really a grand poem to share with friends in a nostalgic look at the last four years. Well done, Sharon

You set me to remembering those who were carried near and far . . .

I like the rhythm in your poem.

There is a lightness as well as rich imagery.

The journey, history of friends who've shared both good and bad experiences, evokes rich emotions.

Well done, thanks.
