when the world was new (and so was i)

when the world was new (and so was i)

A Poem by Kara Emily Krantz

"all is possible," mommy whispers, tucking a curl behind my ear.

eighteen years later i realize she only meant in that moment

and that moment is long past,

almost forgotten, save the subtle scent of lilac

and the fantastic hope

[she could be right].

i faintly recall saffron summer days

where i was amazed at the way the trees

were portals to another land

and the feel of their bark upon my hands

was sublime...

transporting me to another place,

another time.

the feeling of prickers (almost beautiful)

in the lines they left against my skin,

for their ragged tips were markers

of my journey.

and the dynamic quest i held within.

"all is possible," mommy assures me, pushing on my boots

as i press down, wrapped in mittens and earmuffs

and cocoa kisses.

little did i know she meant in that moment

(and that moment is long faded)

save for the lingering wisp of memory

and the marshmallow way

she hugged me.

somehow the feel of snow slipping inside my boots

-so uncomfortable- at the time

brings forth remnants of giggling abandon.

snow in hair, falling into eyes,

snow snow everywhere

*sparkling* with the sunshine.

"all is possible," mommy whispers once more into my ear,

noting the dark shadows beneath my eyes.

little do i know (this next part)

is up to me,

and if i could only see the magic in the trees

i could try again.

-this time with an appreciation-

for the prickers

against my skin.

somehow the feel of snow slipping inside my boots

Fantastic. I grew up in the San Bernardino Mountains and it brought back quite a few memories. I mean, I know it's about a mother and daughter but I could still relate without questioning myself too much.

Beautiful. I love this poem because it reminds me of a tree I use to climb. I called it the Enchanted Tree. I have very fond memories of my childhood and this poem brought them back. It has a childish touch of innocence that I'm sure a lot of people would love to get back to. Thanx for writing!

I'm not sure in the end if you mean 'prickers' but this is a lovely ode to that which passes from loving mother to daughter. Thank you. I am much obliged. I was lucky enough to have a mother such as this.

Have a nice day!

Boy am I glad we are friends now, you are a shining diamond in a land of pretty gems... this is another incredibly powerful piece that we all can relate too.. as kids we have that feeling of invincibility and that we can do anything we want cause then we could with our imaginations and our parents support... I know they always tell us that when we are young to keep us innocent and full of hope, then when we get older things still are possible just not as easy as we thought... back to the poem your words build the images as I could vivdly see the flashbacks you were having of those carefree days... every stanza stands out for different reasons and together they make a masterpiece.

i love the second verse and how you refer to the trees as portals. really shows just how imaginative a child can be. very creative!! :)

This brings me back to my own discoveries in my folks large woodsy backyard
2nd verse is great, the trees as 'portals' and the wonder and amazement of childhood
you so expertly get acroos here.
But we don't have to 'grow up' and 'give in' as you say, it is sad to think that
this childhood belief whispered in our ears by so many mothers should fade over time.
You allow for hope to 'see the magic' and 'try again', go ahead and start changing people's
minds. I really like this, you have a gift. :)
