The Potential To be Ordinary~

The Potential To be Ordinary~

A Poem by NoneOfYourBusiness akaKITTY KUTABAREakaCandyPole

Each morning

in suburbia

rises

like all the rest

with the potential to be ordinary

one step

two step out of bed

stretch with cat

tortoise shell silk

pop the coffee pod

awakening waits in the aroma

(Gilgamesh used to say

“You look wild, girl, with your nostrils flared

like that.”)

I flare my nostrils just like that

still

an animal

with a fair guise of being

domesticated

Each morning

little Kia in blue purrs

radio shock schlock

mindless sideway tilt

scooping me out of the last vestiges of those kinds of dreams

where you wake up with a bruise

no blues allowed

Elvis Duran

phone tap

an auditory candid camera

foot to pedal

metal bath left to soak the bed

crazy laughing

Pine Barrens

invite that tickle in the soles of the feet

to push it

(Gilgamesh used to say

“You laugh like a girl with madness

in her dimples, and lead in her foot,

but don’t slow down, I like the speed.”)

I laugh just like that

still

with a fair guise of being

ordinary

Each morning

beautiful women open doors

believing in imperfections

they wake up in my sunshine

and caffeinated energy

famished for a touch

on clean cheeks

yet to taste a concealer

powder

rouge

they delight in my European flavors

the double cheek kiss

I don’t know my place with them

but they know my place with them

they guide me with unspoken needs

to be

to just be for an hour

my geisha nature complies

(Gilgamesh used to say

“You could seduce Jesus off his cross,

without even trying, do you understand

how dangerous you are.”)

I am a slave to my nature

still

with a fair guise

of sexual ambiguity

Each of my days

in suburbia

flash by

from the view of my speeding mind

each day has the potential to be ordinary

but never is

coffee will always brew

cat will always stretch

the car will always be a shy breath of a coffin

the leaves will change

the Pine Barrens will burn

the deer will rush into the path of finality

there on the side of the road

wet muzzle

fog peppered with sprays of blood

I had to stop you know

my kind don’t leave the dying alone

we were raised otherwise

wrist deep in pain

pupil deep in wonder

at how she flairs her nostrils

the same as I

(Gilgamesh leans over my shoulder to say

“You get it now, wild girl,

why it won’t ever work, you pretending to be something

you are most definitely not.”)

I flare my nostrils like that

and I stop for the dying

still

an animal

with a fair guise

of being ordinary

Oh so amazing - so relate-able for those of us free, feeling, creative, wild, animal souls living amongst the barely alive. Reminds me of all the things I kept hidden when I was married, living in Town Home suburbia. I now let my spirit run wild and free in a tiny apartment and every forest preserve I can find and it's a delectable life...

Again I am in awe.

Good job with this! People forget they were once undomesticated. Wish to be that way again!

A refuge from another era, or a total alien in this sideways world... The teeter totter balance of the outward appearance of a cold heart & the inner love for all.

She stops for the Deer because that's her. Whispering into it's dying ear is just another soliloquy.

You have such a way with creating a scene - even when that scene won't stop dancing around the room.

really liked this one, Selene. if there's anything i've learned it's this: there's no such thing as ordinary. your poem captures this beautifully.

And aren't most of us just hiding under a thin layer of normal? I adored this.

Wow, what a journey this is...
From getting out of a suburbian
bed to roaming through the Pine
Barrens in a dream sequence to
being just ordinary... Nice!
