Darling Daughter

Darling Daughter

A Poem by desertraven

Darling Daughter

Reflecting...

The day she

was born

the perfect name?

We were torn

Ribbons

and lace

with an

angel’s face

sugar and spice

and everything nice...

OH REALLY?

Fast forward

threw the "tweens"

right into the

terrible teens!

The make-up

and hair

the fashion

despair

hormones and

mood swings

PMS and other

fun things

the looks and

the attitude

not an ounce

of gratitude

boyfriends

and curfew

doing things

they shouldn’t do

piercings and

tattoos on their bum

revealing clothes

her friends have some

school projects

and finals

my sanity

spirals

dear, oh dear

the Senior year

so full of cheer

graduation pictures

and supplies

watch how the

money flies

Senior skip day

and the alibi’s

Then comes the day

she walks across the stage

when the chaos is done

made it threw the first one...

Sandra, you have an amazing way with words, and the form you chose to encapsulate your thoughts
is refreshing and artistically devised, you penned this with particular energy, the vibrance of
what it is to be a parent, i love the way you expressed the idea of growing up, gives this poem
vibrant, and heartfelt imagery, with a total emphasize on experience, as well as the ending lol
ah, you put the perfect humorous, satrical spin on the entire meaning, the bold context brought
the entire scope into bliss, expressed with creative heart, its a fun read, thank you for sharing such talent

This makes me want to have kids, but not teenagers. Anyways, it's compelling that here you've raised a daughter all the way to graduation day and still have time to cultivate your creative interests, such as stories and poetry. Usually when people get burdened with life, i.e. Jobs, kids, etc, they lose touch of that creative universe, but it's still there. Hurry up and post "Mystic Awakenings" again.

This is so utterly perfect for me to read right now. I'm on the brink of my first daughter graduating in 2008 and then she'll be off to MSU to study pre-med. I am currently going through so much of this emotional rollercoaster, but I'm trying to forever keep it in memory, as all too soon she will be on her own and considered an adult. Boy am I going to miss the school days! Thank you for your lovely poem...it will forever hold many wonderful (and sometimes painful) memories for me.

write on!

Aw, this is wonderful! I remember my mom telling me-( as we all do!)- saying: "Just wait until you have a daughter!" Ofcourse this was when I was a rebellious teeny bopper and looking back I feel SO sorry for my parents! Man, I was a real s**t. lol
This is a terrific expression of what a parent goes through from baby to adult. Kudos!

A true hallmark revelation. This is touching with just enough spice of humor to make it fun and enjoyable. Sarah has done a remarkable job with the heart warming inspiration of our children progressing through the journey of maturity. With tasteful artistic format and fun lyrics this piece is a must read and a must see. The imagery is flowing and vivid. The feelings are warm and wonderful....What a fantastic piece that has the mark of perfection and the promise of a Card....This is my favorite piece.... "Reflecting.. The day she was born" AND EVERYTHING THAT FOLLOWS AFTER THAT.....
