Young Sunflowers

They turn to the West

then back to the East at night.

Youngsters of the light.

Only young sunflowers will track the sun through a process known as Heliotropism, and then they will re-orientate back to the East through the night to face each day's dawning.   As they mature, they lose this ability and most will remain facing to the east.  Truly, they are one of the many children of the light.

Love this so much. I adore sunflowers. I only recently found out that they track the sun. I was talking to my husband about our neighbour's sunflowers last year, he knew. What neither of us knew is that it is only young sunflowers that track the sun. Beautiful flowers, so lovely and bright and a favourite for children to nurture.
