Winter Passing

Winter Passing

A Poem by William
"

it's winter again, a white-washed and frozen sky.

"

it’s winter again.
you’re falling in love,
you never knew
it happened like this.
it’s like a cliché,
your arms around her.
you can feel her heart beat
softly. wisely and slow.
why does yours beat
so much harder?

snow falls on her hair and face,
and her cheeks are flushed.
you lie together in the park and watch
the winter passing, the people passing.
she’s never looked more beautiful.
‘merry christmas.’ and ‘i love you.’
though you’ll see her tomorrow,
it makes goodbye that much harder.

she’s a puzzle,
but you love a challenge.
she’s tough,
but it’s worth it.
she’s loud,
but you’re louder.
she’s naive,
but you’re a cynic.
she’s impossible,
but it makes you try harder.

there’s a brilliance about her,
a luminescence in her eyes.
but you know one day
the radiance will die.
‘then i’ll go out in style.
let go.’
without her, it’d be harder.

she’s your Juliet,
being around her is a natural high,
of blurring lines and blurring vision.
surges of passion and rapture,
and the hammer of her heart in your ears.
then you come crashing down,
‘cause every time she leaves,
you fall harder.

suddenly she’s gone with spring.
you knew it couldn’t last,
you knew one day
she’d dance away.
you knew your heart would break,
but it’s healed now,
and it’s stronger, harder.

you thought you could do this.
autumn says, ‘don’t think of her,’
hopeless advice.
you’re helpless.
she is your thoughts.
you dreamed of her all summer,
it’s what made life all the harder.

the next autumn comes
and she arrives with it,
standing your doorstep.
just a smile, nothing but a sad smile,
that says,
‘you and i are past our dancing days.
hey Romeo, here i am.’
but your heart’s harder.

through apologies and pleading,
you don’t sway.
you want to hurt her,
turn her away.
the light dies, she leaves,
but she’s your martyr.
the knot in your stomach is harder.

when you can’t take it anymore,
you call her.
apologies tremble on your lips,
but she won’t hear you,
she won’t pick up.
leave a message,
but you’ll work harder.

she’s the only one.
she’s your Juliet,
and you shouldn’t have been the one
to take her radiance away.
‘where are you, Juliet?
it’s time to start again.’
you look hard, but luck is harder.

it’s winter again,
snow is falling.
people are falling in love,
you’re falling again.
alone. ‘merry christmas.’
back at the park,
with a book in your hand,
your eyes searching,
searching for her.
you look harder.

then she appears,
in her uncanny way.
she stands like she knew
you’d be there.
something in her eyes says she’s there
for the same reason you are.
you thought it’d be harder.

the falling snow is a blank canvas
for apologies,
for new beginnings,
for new love.
you walk towards her,
wisely and slow.
you reach out and touch her cheek
as regret tumbles from your lips.
the guilt is gone,
you’re starting over.
the snow makes all the lines soft,
but her lips are softer.

This is seriously the first poem you've ever written? I must say, this is just brilliant. Usually, I tend to pass over long poems because I'm extremely impatient, but this one really caught my attention. I read right through it without pause. I know someone who could relate to this, actually.

You captured the emotion really well, the stages of a truly remarkable relationship. Learning, love, breaking, missing, yearning, wanting, needing, and finally, salvation.
