That word sure wasn't in my vocabulary, but I gotta tell ya, it ain't gonna replace "vittles." Do I sense some sexual connotation, or is that just my sailor brain acting up?

Very nice picture you paint here. Spelling... "hors d'oeuvre" or "hors d'oeuvres"... "viand" is another French word not as commonly heard.
If I had not been a reader of Maupassant and other French writers, I might have had to look it up. But I understand it to mean food, provisions or sustenance...Maupassant uses it to refer to a picnic basket in one of his writes so it evidently has a broad spectrum of meaning. Interesting write with good word choices.
