Chapter two

Shooting stars

“This will be our last house, promise,” Kane said in a less than hopeful tone. It has been over an hour since I left my home and my phobia had begun creeping in.

“You weren’t ready for this Stef, we should get you home. I hope you weren’t doing this for our sake.” Jazz said tucking a bit of loose hair behind my ear for me. I cuddled myself tighter and kept my eyes firmly to ground, yes I was doing it for them but more or less for myself. The guts I had become disruptive as we near the end of our street, too far than I liked. Jazz and I waited for Kane, he lightly jogged up the garden path to, hopefully, the last house.

Jazz watched him like any big sister would but I peered over occasionally, I heard him ring the doorbell and an old lady opened the door. “Trick or treat,” Kane said to lady. As she turned around to retrieve the sweets, Kane did the most outrageous thing ever since I’ve known him. He pulled down his trousers and did a moony as she returned. The old lady dropped her sweets in horror and went inside.

“Your a horrible devil, go away,” She shouted through the door, Kane legged it back to us.

“That was hardly funny, why did you do it?” Jazz laid into him.

“Chill, she’s still standing. Didn’t you hear her cursing at me?” He said shielding himself from Jazz’s slaps.

“Guys please, I want to go home!” I cut in. By now I was itching to get back. It was too dark and cold.

“Hey look at that?” Kane froze, looking towards the sky.

“Were not in the mood for anymore trick’s!” Jazz snapped and pulled at her brother’s arm.

“Seriously, I’m not tricking you!” He said. He held Jazz by her chin and forced it towards the stars. I curiously followed there glares in to the blackness but it wasn’t as black. The stars shone brighter than ever seen them before, there were so many shooting stars. All but one stood out the most. It was larger than the others. “What is that?” Kane said out loud and a bit fearful, nothing compared to what I’m feeling right now.

“I’m not sure, if we were to have a Metroid shower then we would of heard it on the news but this is no ordinary Metroid shower,” Jazz said in her scientist tongue. Yes believe it or not she likes science. Whatever it was, it had our attention, as well as a few others in the neighbourhood. Some watched in admiration but I was feeling the opposite. My eyes begun to blur and a loud ringing grew in my ears. I shook my head a few times hoping it would pass but it grew louder. “Ugh!” I said out loud. Jazz noticed I had placed my hands over my ears.

“Stef, what’s wrong?” I thought I heard her say.

I closed my eyes to bare the noise. It was too loud. “Make it stop!” I winced. I felt Jazz and Kane cradle both sides of me. I forced my eyes shut and flashes of lights surged through the darkness of my eyelids, an image appeared. Of someone, a person with green eye’s; they were saying something but I couldn’t hear them.

“Stef, what’s going on?” Kane yelled through my right hand. Suddenly the ringing noise stopped and the image faded.

“OH, MY GOD!” One of the neighbours’ said to the far right of us, more people had gathered. My blurred venison subsided and returned to the falling star, it grew brighter and closer. As it tore through the sky, it sounded if it were whistling but a lot louder and though it looked miles away. The sound of it hitting the earth’s crust seemed close, too close.

“Christ!” Kane stressed. We saw smoke rise from where is crashed and a soft yellow glow filled the night. I felt woozy on my feet and Jazz felt me lean against her.

“Kane let’s Stef home, she doesn’t look good!” Jazz commanded, she grabbed his arm and pulled frantically at him to help. Everyone was too interested in the Metroid, even Kane.

“I have to go!” I said faintly and slipped out of Jazz’s hold. I walked off and into a crowd; they were all in their costumes. They cooed, screeched and roared, scaring the life out of me.

I know walking home alone would be a mistake but I needed to get back. I did not feel safe anymore.
