JENIFER, LEFT AT HOME

Almond eyes of lightest green

Chestnut hair falls down

Faded jeans

I' know you've seen

I haven't been around

Suddenly I see you've changed

into someone else

I never meant to lose you

When I left to find myself

I've been lost inside my dreams

living high, it's true

You've been lost in growing up

I've lost track of you

Jenifer

Jenifer, please wait another day

You've grown up

So fast while I was turned

The other way

Suntan screens and teenage dreams

Soon it'll be that way

restless mind

spare her some time

Before she grows away

I've been hearing rumors

You can wear your mama's clothes

The baby I remember

Couldn't start to fit in those

Trying on her makeup

putting on her high heeled shoes

You've been lost in growing up

I've lost track of you

Father Time

Please be kind

Won't you travel slow

There's so much I need to see

Places I should go

Writing lines

I'm racing time

Out here on my own

Let me leave what I believe

For those I've left at home

Reviews

Valerie, this is a really great song that many of us can relate to since families tend to move to so many different places and our nieces and/or nephews never stay the same as they were the last time we saw them. Thanks for sharing.

What a beautiful and touching little poem, I loved the descriptions of Jennifer.
The poem would work very well as a song as well, I would think.
GREAT stuff!!!!

This is so nice to be so close to a neice and this is a beautiful poem describing your relationship.
I saw her picture earlier today when you posted them.
It is true that time moves so fast and before you know it, they are all grown up. I am sure that your life has influenced hers in ways that may not seem evident at first glance.

Kids do grow up fast... that is a really beautiful and loving tribute to your niece.

I know this feeling. My great-nephew and I were close. I practically raised him from the time he was a baby as his mother (my niece) was off galavanting about the town. It was a teen pregnancy and the father (another teen) denied everything. Wouldn't be part of it. She didn't want to take care of him so he was at my house most of the time and for some reason he bonded to me more than anyone else (including his grandparents). Now that he is older (12) she is acting like a mother and since she has a new man in her life (husband #3) she won't let me see him anymore. Says she wants him to bond with the new husband instead of me. It tears my nephew apart as well as myself, but eventually he will see her for what she is and that is a sad thing. Your piece here reminded me of all that. I have missed the last two and a half years of his life and regret it so.
