Hands

Hands

A Chapter by Wendy Seames Garner
"

The first thing we feel upon entering the world is the trained hands of the doctors and nurses.

"

Hands are a constant in our lives. The first thing we feel upon entering the world is the trained hands of the doctors and nurses. Our every need as an infant is fulfilled by the gentle, loving hands of our mother. As a child, the strong hands of our father toss us into the air causing us to giggle with love and happiness. We walk hand in hand with childhood friends, one dirty, pudgy hand holding another. The hands of a teacher point us in the right direction. We wait eagerly for the caressing hands of a lover. We admire the strong hands of a workman as he does his job. Sometimes we are given a hand up. Other times hands will pray for us, or we for them. The gnarled hands of the elderly welcome compassionate healing hands. In the end, our hands become peaceful hands.

How wonderful it would be if, this Christmas, we all stood hand in hand together, helping one another, wiping away tears, comforting each other, at peace with the world.

This is a terrific premise to start a book, I am gripped! I truly love the motif of the hand that you use to express the theme of unity and commonality between humans. I can't wait to see where this story goes and, as always, your writing is endearing and beautiful!

Really appreciate the way you built up the glory of hands in all their caring from first breath to the last.. then, use your short final paragraph to raise one's eyes to our world.. giving back what we've received, perhaps.

What a fine piece of writing for this time of year, Wendy.. beautifully put, beautiful meaning.

It's more than a pleasure.. your post is beautiful and somehow.. academic..
There's such hatred and malice in the world--I share your Christmas wish. Oh, if it could be so! Yes, and hands can't be given too much praise for their importance. I've always paid a lot of attention to people's hands, trying to see if they're indicative of character.
