(26) Under The Oak Tree

(26) Under The Oak Tree

A Poem by Chris Smith Welshpoetcs

Two lovers promised each other
Soon they would be apart from one another
Promised no matter how long they were apart
Promised to meet and keep each others heart

Five years have now passed by
He hopes the promise will never be a lie
He is waiting, always waiting patiently
He waits for her under the oak tree

Each year he returns here every time
Remembering a love in its prime
Maybe this year she will be here
Maybe this year she will be near

An old man sits alone, dreaming of the past
An old man wishing that love could last
A promise was made, he still waits patiently
Every year you can find him under the oak tree

poetry is a gateway to the soul
when I read this, that's what it stole

I cannot describe what I felt after reading this..for me 'this' is what is poetry.

I smiled at the end, feeling a knot in my throat. "It's just words" I say, but no, not these. These words fill up my heart with joy, awe, and hope. It's amazing what a few words can make a person feel. Wonderful poetry, Chris. You never fail to please me.

Like this - cool juxtaposition of the endless love, the solid semi-permanent oak tree, and the here-today gone-tomorrow human.

The oak tree is such a strong image here because of how sturdy and strong it is. It definitely adds to the sadness of one waiting for the love that never returns. He may never find his true love, but that old sturdy oak tree will always be there for his memories. I wonder though why he never tried to find her in any other manner, perhaps she died, moved away, got married.. seems so sad though to linger on for a love from so long ago.

This reminds me of a certain country song in which the name splits my mind..... It had something to do with a tree, a lover, fate. This is amazing. At first I was like, "ehhh, should I read this?" because I'm not usually a fan of the simplicity of rhymes, but that ONLY applies to when they drag on..and on... andonandonandon. but this, no, this is different. i enjoyed it a lot! GOOD WRITE!
