Carpe Diem

Carpe Diem

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

“Don't you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you're not taking advantage of it? Do you realize you've lived nearly half the time you have to live already?” ― Ernest Hemingway.

"

Carpe Diem

Leave of absence,

not often granted

as noses to the grindstone

real life passes us by.

We are burdened by fear,

by bullying employers,

mortgages and desires.

Children

are expensive commodities too.

Then too late to relent

and take matters

into our own hands.

Too late to live life

to the full,

we fall upon the

rusty swords

of aging

and die.

Thank you for your kind support FCB
So true. I have in life seen so many working towards the goal of everything for the family and travel. When they reach that point only one thing is missing. Them. They work themselves to death. You must savor a bit on the journey since life can surprise you. Beautiful truthful piece. Thanks,

Thank you Willard and Carpe Diem!
sad but don't we all do it, well nearly all, a true picture of life John, its one of those sad facts that most of us are trapped before we know it, like me i had a life of my own for about 2 years and reached for a better way, now stuck in a mortgage, retired, not enough income to pay it, letters from the bank and sometimes i sit and think what the hell happened, how did i leave that life behind and end up here, yep your poem really hit a note for me, another excellent poem from your very productive pen :)

Ha! Thank you muchley Andrew.
I am retiring when I'm 53. I could work longer but I believe time is more important than money. So true your piece here.

That is a great plan Robert. Just make sure you do have things to fill your time with. Many thanks.
Why is it, that no one wishes to get old? Isn't that the purpose of life, to live a long and happy one? Growing old has to be a priviledge, for it is denied to many.

I always enjoy these introspective writes the most, for you write them with such conviction.

I intend to stay younger than springtime and twice as exciting - how about you? ; )

Thekids these days seem to have the right idea. The new motto spreading across the yute of today (lol) id YOLO - you only live once. I hope they are using it wisely.
With age comes caution and worry to boot.
Well penned John !
