Hair Today

Hair Today

A Poem by AJNJ
"

How sweet strains sour

"

Love is hair today

 gone tomorrow

It was copious once

Springing in youth

threaded with daisies

and orange blossoms

Unknown, the sparseness

of seasons that lay ahead

or the lice of indifference

that nibble away its roots

Sweat and toil just

burnished it some more

as two heads met in

fragrant, flowing places

And beauty was beheld

even in tousled disarray

Till the disquieting days

of grey swept in

ruffling sleek certainty

with slovenly doubt

Faith’s tresses clipped

Replaced by the fear of fall

The buoyance fell flat and

we assumed colors

from black to burgundy

But the colors leached out

The ‘perms’ never lasted

And bleached hope never

revived in steamy salons

Wispy and worn we were

left thumbing for passion

in 50 shades of grey

By far the best, most extensive, tightly-wrapped extended metaphor I've ever read! This even surpasses the king of extended-metaphor, the cafe's very own Jacob (with a long hyphenated last name). You took "hair" as far as hair can go. You pulled in all the grime & vermin to show how radically hair can deteriorate from that light frothy bullshit we frolicked in, in our youth! This is hilarious, clever, & biting so close to most of our hairy asses (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Will take all the grey hair I can get; beats baldness.

Thanks a lot for the appreciation sir!

I like the way this flows, like my own locks they did once flow.. the time of hair peace and all that jazz... I still have all mine, although now very much a silver back, hair to stay, at least for a while :)

Thanks a lot for such an encouraging review Ms. Ruth. Means a lot.
Did somebody say Hare today? My hair never grew back fully after it was all shaved off in the Air Force LOL consequently so did my first true love after the air force perhaps I should now call it the Hair Force now LOL I don't mind so much about the hair but I am quite sure I never loved like that again. What a very clever analogy Mr Peston this did give the Bunny a chuckle:)

Love and hair, easy come easy go in some cases. I appreciated the humour in this piece and smiled when I remembered my own dear husband's thick black hair when we first met. Luscious, with a slight curl. The love lasted, alas the hair didn't. Beth our granddaughter who lives with us often teases him about being follicly challenged. He takes it very well. Says to her that his once thick hair just waved goodbye to him one day. Once in his fifties the greying started, then the thinning. It must be difficult for men, women don't experience the loss of hair in the same way although the loss of colour is inevitable. Your use of descriptive language in this piece is superb. A light hearted read, although maybe for some men who suffer, maybe some wishful thinking. Yes, maybe some returning to days of former glory.

Thank you very much sir.
Some good imagery in this one ("lice of indifference"). A somber comment on the vagaries of love. Would you settle for 10 shades?
