Forgotten

Forgotten

A Poem by George David Hope
"

Always have and will have a fascination with graveyards. Was watching an episode of Hollywood Graveyards and they visited an old forgotten cemetery which gave me the idea for this.

"
                                                                           FORGOTTEN
Gentle breeze and chirping birds
Leaves lie on the ground
Rows of stones stand silently
Only disturbed by natures sound
Crypts covered with tendrils of ivy
Markers covered in moss
Words long weathered away by wind and hail
Nature showing who's the boss
Gates secured years ago
Lock a block of rust
Once well walked paths now overgrown
Residents long since turned to dust
No one comes to visit
Or tend this place of eternal rest
To speak to departed loved ones
Who long ago were blessed
No one even remembers
Or knows that they are there
Forgotten and all alone
Sleeping without a care
There you go..not my best work but like I always say...you cannot complain you're getting it for nowt

Sad, reminders of people who ones lived a full life alive. Nature takes its course. And a grave is covered with testimonies of time passing. And all you are left with are reminders of who they were. And the tokens of gifts left at the graveside. You did the justice, George. Once we are gone we are sadly gone. But our memories live on. As long a headstone or a tribute is always there to remind. As family members come and go. Along the line of time.

I've never visited a graveyard & the idea isn't intriguing to me, but your poem makes it seem more intriguing and I'm reading a book -- the author digs up remnants of ancestors, graves, etc. In short, this is a widespread intrigue, even if it isn't mine & you put a face to it, helping me see why the intrigue (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

my favorite line: "Nature showing who's the boss"
(love this aspect of looking at old ruins, how nature gnaws!)

I like the cut of your jib. For reals. You sound like I do sometimes.

Wow this is too awesome, enviable in well rhymed flow on forgotten tombstones and how you describe the imagery overgrown on it so poetically with aptly superb word choice and remember the forgotten dead. So your poem thinks of them at least. Kudos for the great poetry.

Thank you for your very kind words and glad you enjoyed reading it.
The house i grew up in was at the side of an old cemetery, and even as a child i was fascinated by the atmosphere and oldness of the place.
I rather hope now that i am forgiven for all the lovely coloured stones i stole and perhaps even the odd daffodil or two; it wasn't done in badness... honestly it wasn't :(

I have a fascination for graveyards too George. You have certainly created the atmosphere of a forgotten cemetery with these lines. Overgrown with nature reclaiming what was once hers. A very visual write. Nicely composed and descriptive

Yes, George, it's a sad commentary on the emphasis people place on a human life. The Holocaust will always be remembered, but unfortunately the moss covered markers will not. Thanks for posting.
