Passing of the Seasons

Passing of the Seasons

A Poem by KWP

Your short anxious breath remains a flash through my thought
A memory wished to delete, yet permanently bought
You always taught me life goes on, everything flows
Human life burns down like a candle, next stop nobody knows

Watched you as you slept, the colours of Autumn crept in
A melody of red hues reflecting on your ever paling skin
Endless days spent together gazing up into the hills
Silently acknowledging changing moments which eternity fills

Your acceptance so natural, I was screaming inside
As the leaves started to fall, my tears erupted to hide
Knowing what lay ahead, somewhere around the next bend
You had lived a full life, found peace toward the end

Catching kind breeze proffered up for our pleasure
Autumn preparation before cooler weather
Noticing the slight changes of the season each day
Allure of colors filled our hearts all the way

Ever smiling and sensing my fear of you gone
You would laugh, you would joke, teaching me to be strong
Holding your hand, you were drifting from here to the new
Closing the end of your life, said ‘time to start something new’

My anger rebelling, cursing this damn disease
Ever stoic you, enjoying the view through the trees
Thoughts whilst you slept, of wisdom you did deliver
Showing the universe and what love means as a giver

Leaves kept on falling, your candle burnt down
This journey is over, my own tears I do drown
A hole left in my heart, howling, gaping wide
Time after you left me, a sadness unable to hide

In sentiment, I watched as the seasons rolled by
Slight changes each day releasing my cry
Passing through many a cold winters night
The pain slowly subsiding, offering more light

As I watched out the window where many hours passed
Where we sat side by side, not knowing how long it would last
Alone gazing and wondering what next life would bring
Smiling in your memory, seeing new life in Spring.

Beautiful, and heart-wrenching. Soaking us in sorrow, sympathy, empathy, and memories of our own pain. The twist of hope and a smile at the end was nice and unexpected. I hope that smile and peace is truly yours.

THis is a lovely poem. People can be stoic in the face of death, but it's hard for those who love them to let go.

There is a marker between life and death, KWP. I think it is not so much that we are afraid of either, yet the journey passed on to us in seeing the transition is surely the most painful of all, especially if we are close to that person.

We cry because with them we were protected and felt strong, they were our best friend and our closest confidant. Death takes this away and forces us to burn in the immutable fire of change.

What a beautiful death poem. I was so touched by this. You put tears in my eyes as I read this. So, as a poet, you have suceeded.
