A Poem by KWP

bewilderment drapes
like a droughtstriken tree
in the arid plains
where souls linger
in hope
the lesson can be learned
before the last departure arrives

torn asunder
desperation squeals

the patchwork of
this life
cannot be reassembled

there was a time
the exit was clear

distant memories
flake and fade
into the winds of
of forever

surely it may be my turn next ?

I do pushups in the morning and smoke weed in the afternoon for that.

It still doesn't mean my cat won't die decades before I will. How many cats can I have? Probably three... three more cats. I probably won't be doing pushups when I'm on my last cat.

meow.

I've read some of your reviews, but I disagree, your poem does not strike me as being mostly about death. I feel the very authentic way it feels when getting older, you have to fight off the regrets & hold on tightly to the hope that there's still some living left for you. The fact that death is seemingly at the door is more like an impetus to seize the last few drops while you can. Your word-crafting is exquisite, as far as being beautifully haunting, just like it feels to get older (I'm 62) . . . always reminders (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I may be looking at this through a dark lens but I read this as someone looking at death approaching as they progress through life. It is a crisp flowing piece of freeverse and reads well.
