Trust

Trust

A Poem by Mike Cole

The mere thought of civilian life made him want to gouge his eyes
He wanted to be with the presidents, the CEO's, the rich guys
Not to be part of a culture that would embrace his normality
He wanted something more out of this life

And everyday he would come home to his wife feeling unfulfilled
He couldn't provide his family with a big house because he was unskilled
He couldn't provide them with a new car because of the electric bill that had just been instilled
He couldn't provide them with enough

So his wife say this is it
You don't provide me with what we need
I want a husband who can succeed
Not one who can barely pay the bills
While working 12 hour shift
My mother told me I should've married Clark Smith
I married you because I thought you would make money one day
Not a bum racking up the bills to pay

And the man says
This is so frustrating
God what should I do
I thought you said you would see me through
I went to church
I followed you
And I still feel as if your love has withdrew

And today I got a letter in the mail
It was from my eldest daughter
Her husband just left her
And God I don't know why you would give me this wear and tear
While all of these other things are happening
Oh the pain, the torture it brings
Is it to test me
Or is it some sick joke
I want to trust you God I really do
But after all that I've been through
I don't know if I can still trust you

Since he no longer has anything to believe in
He believes it is time to end it
Because no one seems to get it
And he is about to lose it
So if anyone does permit
He holds the knife in his hand
Unsure of what he will do
And then a small ring on the telephone
Someone on the other end saying "I love you"

What does that even mean
I thought I had a wife who loved me
Wrong!
I thought my daughter was loved
Wrong!
And who really loves
We are all just selfish beings
Uh God why?
Why this pain?

So laying on the floor in tears
Unsure if one blow could end all his fears
He decides to pray for strength
"Why not"
"It couldn't hurt to try"
"Dear God take this pain away"
"For you are more powerful than I"
"I don't know why you had this plan"
"For Lord I am just a mere man"
"Amen"

And when his eyes opened
He saw new light
It wasn't as if the demons had vanished
But he came to the realization that he had his protector in sight
And the protector's great might
May be able to get him through the night
And combat the demons that instilled the fright

It was a different feeling
A feeling of security
One that came from trusting
From trusting the one without impurity

I like this. I like how it portrays the tough turmoil that can lead us to such dark and confusing places. I don't think I could ever memorize this myself, if you want to though, I respect that.
