Answering Machine

Answering Machine

A Poem by Luke L

I like to turn off the ringer on my phone
I like to see that red number flashing
In the middle of my dirty stained machine
For capturing voices
Till I want to press the button
And put them in my head
By way of my ears

What a great nostalgic write...I had one of these voice mail machines back in the 80's...it was one of my favorite technology at the time...thanks for taking me back. Excellent poem.

thank you very much :)
It's so beautiful how long you could tape a voice, and keep it forever... in the old days... :) when someone special nowdays calls me, it's gone in 3 days, stupid voicemails.... ;) I loved this little piece of you, it has a great nostalgic message in it ;-)

Neat. The fact that you can write about something as random as an answering machine is rather cool. Good stuff.

thank you man
Do people still have answering machines? ;)

Seriously, though...this was rather inventive. I conjoured up many different possibilities in my own mind with this one. Why would someone do this? Perhaps in seeing the flashing number it gives a sort purpose to ones own mortality...the more people who care about you (good or bad), the higher the number. Perhaps you just aren't ready to hear what people have to say...it's a bit of escapism. When the time is right, and the mind can handle it, I'll listen to those damned messages.

Anyway...whether I'm right or wrong, or completely off base, this was interesting and provoked my mind to wandering. I know that I often allow calls to go to voicemail because sometimes text messages and voicemails are easier to handle than actual human voices--how sad is that?
