On these burial grounds

On these burial grounds

A Poem by Mark D

On these burial grounds

Which our history encompasses

We cannot deny belonging

But could never be ourselves

As the first inhabitants of pain

We fell from the hoax of love

They presented us with slaves

To help bury the deceased

And so it was born

The staple of my new culture

Too deeply rooted to ever be seen

Too ugly for self-investigation

In longing for new prestige

We ended the feud

And isolated the period

We forever long to forget

This makes think of any culture that has been the oppressors. Actually this makes me think of the Native Americans, what the settlers did to them and then how they gave them slaves, to those who assimilated into the European culture, and then they the oppressed became the oppressors. It's a cycle to be sure. Good poem. Very evocative and thought provoking.

Dear Mark D,

From the title, I infer that this has something to do with history and war. I paused on these two lines and I had to think, "We cannot deny belonging/But could never be ourselves." I find a sense of connection between history and man in the line that says, "we cannot deny belonging." Then I move to this line, "We fell from the hoax of love" and then I whisked to a point in time as if I am taken to that time the pilgrims came to America, behaving like brothers to the Native Americans, only to betray them with a hoax of love. Actually now that I look at it; it reminds me of the unwanted nor liked history of the founding of America. Powerful words indeed. The poem presents a war in all different planes: emotional, spiritual, and physical I see that is always in front of us. "We forever long to forget."

Very thought provoking!

Thanks for sharing!

God bless

This is an excellent, thoughtful poem, with a look at the problems of one culture harming an older one, an image that applies to a whole number of historical situations, as well as events that now take place. A fine write.
