On these burial grounds

On these burial grounds

A Poem by Mark D

On these burial grounds

Which our history encompasses

We cannot deny belonging

But could never be ourselves

As the first inhabitants of pain

We fell from the hoax of love

They presented us with slaves

To help bury the deceased

And so it was born

The staple of my new culture

Too deeply rooted to ever be seen

Too ugly for self-investigation

In longing for new prestige

We ended the feud

And isolated the period

We forever long to forget

This makes think of any culture that has been the oppressors. Actually this makes me think of the Native Americans, what the settlers did to them and then how they gave them slaves, to those who assimilated into the European culture, and then they the oppressed became the oppressors. It's a cycle to be sure. Good poem. Very evocative and thought provoking.

There are a lot of different nuances to this, I think...culture vs. the individual person.....pain vs. love.....who we are vs. who we want to be....yeah, there is a feud in all these things. So we bury it to end it all together but can't get it out of our mind because it still serves its purpose. Great work on this, Mark. It really leaves me thinking. Favorite line, "we fell from the hoax of love"...what a spin to put on it.
