Ennui

Ennui

A Poem by Mayank

Eyes glued on a screen

I see,

Dimwit comedian

Reigning Machiavellian

Corrupt leader

Lame actor

Pathetic pop singer

News reader

Making headlines

One after another.

In isolation,

 I see the future

Overqualified

Lethargic

Robotic

Chaotic

Idiotic

Hedonistic

Mechanically I cease

Dirt, that I breath.

Fingers on joystick

Prescription of pills

Same ol’ pornography

Rollin’ blunt

Where’s the c**t?

We don’t need to hunt

Naked in the front

Publicity stunt

This existence is perplexed

With ennui, died significance.

I have been trying to write something but I have failed miserably, this is my attempt after a long time.
This one is inspired from the song Fear of Blank Planet - Porcupine Tree.

I see how you have listed the more subjective (and hence debated) opinions here as ennui. Corrupt leader, talent of a pop singer, acting ability of an actor, all of this is one of the more debated topics all around the world, but you rise above the cliche, merely with the use of the word lethargic. This poem is no longer a complaint for lack of quality, it is more of a desire for excitement. Fantastically put.

Yes, they are debated and can be used only for debate. For e.g. it's technology I am using the site .. read more

And that was brilliant.
Seems the world is dragging most folk down of late...nothing seems exciting or fresh or even real anymore...poignant exploration and I would not say you failed, by the way :) x

Yes! reality is the thing of past.
Your bluntness brings sociological ideas into reality boldly. I don't know that I sympathise with all of these feelings, but I am swayed to conceptualise the predominant force driving these feelings. On a lighter note: together we can progress!

Yes, we probably can as of now I am trying to find the path for leaving this tech-obsessed life.
Even though it's the sad truth about society, I love this piece:) the last line brings it all together and makes an excellent end

Good one Mayank. People face this ennui around us so much and we don't even realizse what are we doing and what we want in life.

I wish I cud cz even I am into same dilemma dear
In a way this seemed like torture.
To be surrounded by nothing and being
able to find no peace.

Yes, certainly, it's difficult to live this way.
Begs the question, is arm imitating life, or is life imitating art?
Who's to blame, I wonder.
Very thought provoking.
Thank you for sharing.

Thank you Vanesa! Glad you liked it.
In psychology there are studies about this. The more a person is exposed to the shocking, the less it shocks and the more normal and acceptable it seems. We are so bombarded with images that would have never made media 20 years ago, that it has become the norm and lost all significance and yes, promoting ennui.
I like your laundry list of complaints that almost drones until you add a shock factor, almost as if to shake your reader from his ennui about your subject.

Mayank, I realize that progress is necessary but I feel that the emphasis on technological innovation is in essence a method of eliminating the need for human interaction. Need something? There's an app for that! Everything you want on a handheld device...how boring is that? Ennui indeed! Great write, sir. take care...dan
