50 Shades of Lies

50 Shades of Lies

A Poem by Michael Thrower
"

This one IS actually inspired after I read and discussed 50 Shades of Grey.

"

It’s all in perception

A new, general direction

To face your mind

In the state of a blind

To believe what’s not

You seek what’s been sought

Twist of reality

To make casualty

You think what is wrong

As if it were right.

To snap in her head.

Reading those words

Believing the deceiving

That says it should be

“This way’s more pleasing”.

Downgrading humankind

Losing our hope

We cling to examples

Reliving a joke.

Author's Note

Michael Thrower
A discussion I had with a friend about 50 Shades of Grey "Making women believe THIS is how they should act". Now, I haven't taken any sides on this yet, but on the side that says "It's just not right" is where I'm leaning, and thus... I wrote this.

Hi Michael,
I love the way you end your lines with opposite words that rhyme, you give this piece a melodic ring that just let's the words flow as you gracefully let them roll on your tongue.
Your point: Made
Understood: Definitely, you show that not everything you read should be the basis of how you act towards life or a situation.
I agree with your words that there's always two sides of a story. You as a viewer, reader, have to decide on which side you take.
Language: Exquisite and understandable, you made this fun and understandable to read

Woot! Male power!
It is reassuring to know that another of the male gender read this book too and actually liked it(well i enjoyed it) Even though in the book she kinda gets manipulated into changing but the most amazing thing is that at first it seems like Christian is the one calling the shots but slowly Anastasia is healing him...Which is awesome. It's pleasing to know also that I wasn't crazy when I read the title and thought of 50 shades of grey. I really like your poem. The rhythm is amazing and the rhyming is perfect but all i'm really skeptical about was the moral like...what was the message? What were you thinking of when writing this?

I read the entire trilogy in 48 hours and enjoyed it but I also enjoy/love this poem about it. It is true... some women expect too much after they read or watch a certain fiction. I like to blame Hollywood for commercializing men. They set the standards for you guys way too high. Girls expect their next run in with a man to be Christian Grey who is a billionaire with a hidden secret but they need to get a grasp on reality.

When I read books like this, I know the characters are completely fictional and I don't take what I read in a book out into my life. I actually know a woman who has read 50 Shades at least 5 times now. She has changed her entire dating lifestyle because of this book. She has turned down a lot of dates because they are "not ideal like Christian Grey." I think that is absolutely ridiculous. Not just with 50 Shades but with Twilight, Hunger Games.. All of these series get way out of hand. Girls, Taylor Lautner and Katniss Everdeen are not going to show up on your porch step. Stop pretending and get a grip.

Okay enough with my rant.. Amazing poem Michael. Especially this part:

I refuse to ever read that series...my Nana actually tried to get me to read it, and I was very adamant about my refusal to do so. Glad the discussion inspired this poem for you. It'd be interesting if you placed more imagery from the book in the poem...

Ohhhhh good point ;) I suppose I could add something...
Haha! I've heard about the book "50 Shades of Grey", but mostly facts that it's too inapproriate for my age group. Well, me and my friends heard that from a couple of parents and a teacher. I'm glad that I haven't read it then, if that's the main concept of the book. What's truly ridiculous is when people change according to how the book tells them how to. I'm my own character, who God made me to be. I won't change myself because some author made certain suggestions. A great poem and I agree with your Author's Note--"It's just not right". Keep writing these excellent pieces! :D

You're welcome :D Haha
I'm not a woman, but it's funny how often I hear women objecting to these kinds of perceptions, yet an awful lot of them seem to be fascinated by this book...it's almost like that "bad boy" phenomenon...a million girls claim to not like that kind of guy, yet those are the same million I see out with them...as you can probably guess, I'm grateful to you for writing this :P

It isn't against women at all. It's for women. It's porn for women.

A good friend of mine read the whole series. She said it was "wasted entertainment." What she meant was she enjoyed wasting her time off from work and away from her kids reading what amounts to soft porn for women. I'd imagine most fans of the series feel the same way. 50 shades isn't telling anyone anything any more than the twilight series did. What Twilight proved was you could make Vampires into brooding Emo P*****s and teenaged girls would lose their adolescent minds over the story and make everyone a s**t load of money in the process. Personally I'd give my left testicle to write something that popular. Anyone who ever thought about writing for a career would.

I never read the book, but from what I have read about it you captured the essence well here.

Degradation is never acceptable. This point seems to be lost on so many players in the lifestyle covered by the books.

Nicely done.

Thank you very much Wes.
I wonder how many of your reviews will start with "Well, I never read the book, but..." *laugh*

Well, I never read the book, but this was a very clever piece, Michael. I enjoyed it, but I think I'll just stick with the good old-fashioned Story of O to dictate how I should behave ;-)
