We Are Human

Give us a minute or two

What we say is gonna be true

You say this or that

So now we’re gonna have this chat

There are people who’ve been through things

Taking these words

“Everybody has voices, hers are just a little louder”

Yeah, I have loud voices

People say, “give her a break”

No, let me explain

I got demons and voices in my head

I can’t run or hide

I write how I feel

I write how I act

I want to scream 

To my paper, 

I want to bleed

I want to cut the voices off

I want to rid these demons

One person right now 

Helping me through this

It’s hard for me to sleep at night

I know you say, “I hope you’re getting help”

Hun, I tried!

They put me in a mental hospital

I’ve been there too many times

I have seen things a sixteen-year-old shouldn’t have 

I’ve experienced things I shouldn’t have until I was older

I had my “first time” stolen from me when I was young 

I’m sorry for ranting but someone said something

When I read it, it hurt

Someone stood up for me

Someone said something!

I love this girl 

She looks out for me

She defends me, too

She might be the reason I still exist today

It’s like we’ve known each other for fifty years

When really it’s only been a few days

But it was like an instant connection

It had me in a haze

We grew close by zoom

Her laugh made me smile

She’s been there for me

Even when people were being hostile

I love her,

She’s been such a good friend

Here’s to us, Nix

Hopefully, we’ll be together ‘till the end

Author's Note

Nix and I created this together, this is our second collab and this means a lot to me deeply. She knows so many things and she is such a good friend. I can't see life without her since I met her. She and I have gone through so many things as the same person and yet we are two very different people.

I'm glad you found a friend through this site. Sometimes it is hard to find people who love poetry like us, so when you find that person and connection, hold onto them dearly!
And this poem makes me sad. As a nurse and also someone who has dealt with a lot of mental health issues, it is a constant struggle, and a daily battle. The right combo of medicine, therapy, and active change in toxic behaviors or environments. The mental health institution is broken and needs serious repair. Poetry is a therapy of its own, though, and I hope you find some inner peace with expressing yourself.

Collaborating with Nix has become an important part of my life, she's easy to love. Barleygirl calls the collabs "poetry babies" because it's the closest thing to making word love. I've discovered that people's emotions get just as tied up as making actual love. If you roll over and start snoring your partner may feel dejected.

Friendships like this are rare, and they are very worth it. Parts of this were painful to read, but heartfelt. I felt a deep ache in my soul as I read some of the words. I am glad you have a friend to ground you and pick you up when you need it--we all need that. Beautiful poem :)
