Woo, Jersey tomatoes! This one is really tasty Rita! Tomato basil sandwiches are really great :-) I like how you describe the tomatoes, especially the detail about them coming from the corner store. Also, that closing part about Christmas in July is a nice touch.

Mmmm - gotta get good, crusty Italian bread. A light toasting, sliced tomatoes, drizzle of olive oil, pinch of salt & pepper, fresh basil leaves... (a rub of garlic if you like, but not needed - sliced mozzarella optional, too.) Guess what's for lunch? ;)

Ha! Thank you, Shelley! We went to the store today to see that the long-awaited tomatoes were in - my heart sings each summer for these beauties! Looking at my sandwich of red and green, I thought, "THIS is what they mean by Christmas in July!" :)
