Sundown and Wind Farms

Sundown and Wind Farms

A Poem by Chris Shaw

far from finding
wind farms an eyesore
they stay a fascination as
offshore turbines salute
a fast dimming sky

from Roan beach
carbon fibre blades rotate
as moderate winds
aid graceful clockwise
turning

row on row they stand
embracing air
as though a surgeon's knife
sliced through sky's heart
rip roaring red no sutures
as crimson clots appear

they spread it bleeds
it plasters heaven's highway
reflected in evening's dark
salty waters
skyscape slaughter

as golden sol
slips slowly beyond
horizon's black ribbon line
while hours pass on by
building clean energy

What a great image blended with such poetic words.
"as though a surgeon's knife
sliced through sky's heart
rip roaring red no sutures
as crimson clots appear"
Then the whole next stanza
"they spread it bleeds
it plasters heaven's highway
reflected in evening's dark
salty waters
skyscape slaughter"
Great lines Chris

I just love this image you painted in words. It reminds me of a drive down in Southern California in a desert dry area there is a wind farm there. As a child I would often circle my finger on the car window with the turning turbines as the sunset orange red in the background. Its image has a special place in my heart. Thank you for your poem, Chris, it is wonderfully painted poetry.

the motion of the "blades" mesmerizes me .. I am not much studied on them .. they do kill more than their fair share of our National Bald Eagle. The times I have driven past the larger "farms" of them they are more than half shut down for whatever reason. I feel a bit ambivalent towards them; but then I don't have any next door nor even in the State. Too much rough terrain I suppose. We do however have a Co. that builds them and is located here. Your poem is interesting ..beginning with a certain beauty the have then turning to what seems to be a certain violence perpetrated on Mother Nature herself .. cutting .. causing her to bleed and clot .. vivid images Chris! then the turn back as this quiet down a bit with the setting sun and the reminder of the wind turbine's benefit ... clean energy. They take up a lot of space don't they!?

Exquisite imagery describing
wind turbines, which I have seen along the byways… you describe them so cleverly, it’s as if you know something we do not, seems like you’re an expert on these machines as they cut through a vast sky…. Lovely images Chris

What a lovely depiction of wind farm... Rotating of blades and surgical knife, this comparison was so poetic. Your views on nature and its activities are always so vivid.... The sundown backdrop was just perfect.... Love the poem as always

This is the first poem I have encountered that celebrates the beauty of wind farms. It's a notion I have heretofore not considered, but the poet makes it work. Using the imagery of a beautiful sunset, we come to view the turbines almost as a part of the seascape. A more practical advocacy is included in the last verse, which reminds us of the machines' part in producing clean energy. As a coastal resident, I can appreciate this deeply.

You paint a lovely scene. Though I don't believe man can ever create anything that outdoes nature, I smile at the thought of wind turbines doing their thing, powering commerce and homes, while not spewing one bit of pollution. Here's what I know about them "killing birds". They apparently do kill a few, but much of the bad rap comes from oil company-beholden politicians. Also, the orange baboon pitched a fit over them being placed near his Scottish golf course, and "ruined the view". They were put there, anyhow, and he's been complaining ever since. Wind is free, so let's use it.

We have wind turbines in our county ... there is a good deal of wind around here ... most of it coming from politicians.
I could never understand the argument that those spinning blades would kill birds by the thousands. I guess they've never seen birds play "chicken" with cars on the expressway.

Good one Chris.
