Give Me The Roses Keep The Guns

Give Me The Roses Keep The Guns

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

1987 Guns and Roses

"
I danced for him
in nothing but a pair of
cheek hugging flimsy
shorts

with a camisole see
through top with
shoestring straps

yes I danced and played
air guitar to sweet
child of mine

and this bright summer
morn I danced again
wild and wrapped
in a full length
dressing gown

I'll take the roses

So beautiful and so wonderful dear Chris.
"and this bright summer
morn I danced again
wild and wrapped
in a full length
dressing gown"
The above lines were my favorite. We need many dances and many memories to keep hope and love alive. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

Those were the days! Also has this lasting confusion about G&R and Bon Jovi. But if no one minds, I don't either. Speaking of dancing, Billy Idol's Dancing With Myself was a significant influence in my thoughts about social dancing and such. Some heavy hitting meaning there about picking the roses! Thanks for sharing.

You get a 100 out of a hundred just for the line, cheek hugging flimsy shorts, lol Yep, yep yep, I’m a dude; everything is so simple. More seriously, thanks… those were great years, and your piece so subtly depicts the passage of time and how it encroaches on our power… as men and women. It’s a fun read.

Thanks Fran. Whenever I hear those lyrics, up I get. Just gotta dance :)

Two different times scenarios, one when she was a young woman, trying to be sexy and free, next scenario is an older woman, ( perhaps the same) in different scene ready to dance with her partner in a beautiful gown, keeping the memory alive of her youth. Lovely images Chris.
Best,
B.

You're very welcome Chris!
I picture a mom who danced for her child when both were young and then, she danced for him again as an older woman where it is proper to be more covered than when both were young. What do kids know when they are young? As they are older and more aware of the opposite sex, it is more appropriate to cover up. I like this little poem!

G&R had some big hits off Appetite for Destruction. I like the sexy, romantic insinuation in the poem. I'm more of a ZZ Top fan myself but I think Tracii Guns should have stayed with Axl Rose. Tracii was always changing players, shifting band members etc. and so no cohesive "family" ever had time to form. Top, in comparison, had the same members for over fifty years. I enjoyed the read.

as long as they are not bloodied roses, like those in the backseat of the limo parked at Parkland Hospital on November 22, 1963---
Leave the guns take the cannoli and the roses.
Sweet Child of mine....one of their best songs.
the play on Guns and Roses is perfect here.
this poem really gave me a spark today, Chris.
thank you.

This creates the feeling that you’re reading someone’s left-open diary. Makes me curious about the colors worn because the details are so well done. I like it.
