while slow moving river shows flotillas
of leaf-fall in serene flow

like boats afloat an armada of many
willow oak and beech leaves drift

golden in unhurried procession in
downstream direction to our capital

in silent solemnity in memory of
our late Queen peacefully lying in state

It is fascinating to see people's reactions to the passing of their queen. It just shows, among many other things, the power of symbols. The queen was a human being like anyone else, of course, but she was also the embodiment of a number of values, ideas, and virtues which made her a living symbol. It seems that people have an inherent need for such symbols - be that in real life, or in fiction.

Yes, it seemed that the World slowed down during those days of Remembrance.
As a Canadian, she was my Queen too, and I recall fondly a day long ago when she returned my youthful wave from a street corner in New Westminster, British Columbia.

How lovely for you to have that memory. We were cruising on the Thames in our cabin cruiser about twenty years ago, through the crown lands near Windsor. She was out riding that morning with a companion on beautiful black horses. We were thrilled to see her relaxing and enjoying herself. I read that 4.1 billion watched her state funeral procession. She is going to be a hard act to follow. Many thank yous for stopping by.
