Rulers and Sins

Rulers and Sins

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Rulers and Sins

i learned division in fourth grade

and

i learned it again

with the distinction

and distraction

of

a quotient dividing a country

there is no remainder

even if two parties

fraction the dividend

let's overthrow insidious raven

empty the nest

it is infected

straw dogs are barking in the night heat

the nuns who taught us once

have passed through the gates

they have their habits

we have our math

we don't need books

or lessons

we need to fly into a raging wind

a winged vote

a murder of ravens

a murder of a raven

a parliament of reason

the wise ones are watching

and they can figure out

what's left over.

This might be the most powerfully I've seen it expressed, how this election is a game-changer. Such a depth of passion I've not felt in your poetry, which typically dwells in the sardonic. This poem starts out with your usual aloof & carefully constructed metaphor (all admirable), but somewhere along the way you crash into a gut-wrenching plea, flinging mixed metaphors flying left & right. To watch the slow disintegration of your poetic control spoke more to me about your intensity . . . and I feel the same way. It's getting so close now, I almost can't stand to watch anything about it anymore. Just give me the bottom line! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Jacob, I am waiting for the great novel.
"a winged vote
a murder of ravens
a murder of a raven"
I like these lines above. Maybe the ravens can't be killed? Thank you my friend for sharing the amazing poetry.

Such a topical write....we are in the midst of a political struggle and no matter which side of the political fence your ideas fall, it is a difficult time. We can only hope that this election will bring our country a little more peace and togetherness. Lydi**

As you ever have, you use not only skills but imagination to 'talk' about situations, people, who shred the lives of others when gentle and gentling' are the words of the time. Instead the nasties buzz about, like crazed hornets, messing with logic, playing the fool and injecting bile into already shaky conditions'

'.. let's overthrow insidious raven .. empty the nest.. it is infected...'

(Give power a right and - it throws it right back at you, so the old adage goes)

Your use of language is incredible, subtle but legible, comforting too in its own way because you speak out without criminal intent. However, downright appraisal is your right. Many thanks for.. being you.,

All about division in politics. Never have we been so divided, that is both in the States and in the UK. Politics split down the middle. No middle ground I fear. Makes many people unhappy and restless. That's where you took me with this really visual write Jacob. Those ravens ugh.... never have liked those birds.

Yes, no middle ground....thank you, Chris,

I love what this represents as well as how it is representing it! Sometimes, poetry and writing can put all of that hatred and anger into a beautiful set of delicate words and metaphors. Only if words were so quick to change the politics of this world. Amazing as always! ❤️

Indeed a clever play of words as the political dilemma and challenges in the USA (and across the globe) face us as ordinary people with history and some reason.
