How can we tell when a poem is dead? I have no idea. Of course, every time I open a copy of The New Yorker, I encounter poems that should have been aborted.

Dead poems. What a thought. I prefer to think of them as resting. Every now and again I bring them into the open to allow them to breathe for a while. I rarely revise them. No funerals for poems please j:)
The only time my poems rest from revision is when I shred them ... though I suspect many of them manage to plant a seed in my head anyhow. Nicely written. ~Jim

I like that idea of planting the seed...even if they are shredded...
...rest from revision... is there such a thing. Even when get tired of rewriting someone new comes along reads our work and determines- they can do it better (and usually do). Oh well, I guess there are worst ways for a poem to go :)
As always your writing speaks to me.

Thanks for your response, Cherrie,

Very thought-provoking poem. No need of revisions, adjustments, compromises, justifications basically nothing matters like state. When a life tsunami comes the giant waves simply pass through it just like one hundred percent fibrosed lungs where no gas exchange happens even if air containing twenty one percent oxygen, oxygen with high flow or mechanical ventilation in place. Nothing happens there. The person is dead. In the context of covid and different contaminations to respiratory system idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is just like dead poems professor Jacob stated in the poem. I can relate to this poem very easily .

The thought of death, the thought of stillness, now I won’t have to keep revising my poems because they have died….as have I..no more revisions of life or poetry; lovely imagery… ( just a stab j)
Warmly

Oh what a thought or rather what a metaphor. This strikes home with so many dead poems behind me. I'll have to open a boat yard. Your characteristic brevity "less is more" always strikes me with how much you can put into so little. Here the poem is packed with vivid imagery as well that fit so well into its meaning. Another wonderful work Jacob.
