A mirror sees more to us then the image it reflects.

I see you

Not as you want

But as you are

The things you hide from reflection 

Are mine to see in pieces of intention 

I'm simply indifference in glass

In the reflected image I cast

You are not the same in summer as you are in fall

Nor are you in winter as you are in spring

Perspective is yours to play

Reflective is mine to say

I do not cater to vanities aspired

Nor assuage temptation of heart's desire

You can choose to shatter me into a million pieces

But it will not change this prescient thesis

I see you for who you are

In every lie and single scar

Author's Note

My beautiful muse Cate Blanchett sat in front of her vanity mirror asking me with a wicked smile. "Like what you see, mortal?" Who am I to deny her allure, and inspiration.

mirror mirror on the wall. oh vanity. too bad there isn't a real one that will reflect what is on the inside of us. this was quite thoughtful. i think i did a similar write some time ago. well done ... :)

Thank you Pete for your thoughts on this poem. Mirrors have a way of revealing too much of someone if they spend a lot of time staring into it. The mind has a funny way of reflecting more than just an image. I remember an experience I had in my late teens after being released from the hospital after a mental breakdown. There I stood in front of the bathroom mirror after taking a shower when I got home after a 72 hour lock up. What I saw was not me at all and instead looked like someone who had died but didn't realize that they were. It was harrowing to say the least and I swear I could hear that mirror say "you did this". I tend to shy away from mirrors now, even in my old age. I rarely take more than a glancing look or glimpse. Mirrors are filled with regret. Thank you again my friend for your thoughts.

Mirrors can't lie whether we like it or not!When we are left alone in front of a mirror a true reflection of our own self we can see through it.And it shows different us in different time of our life without a false protective cover.This is also true when we are alone and silence acts as a mirror in front of us...

Thank you Cyprian for your kind thoughts on this poem. The first line you quoted is indeed one of my favorite in the piece and truly defines the works theme. The mirror indeed sees our soul through our mind's eye. It is best to only look at it in glances for no telling what will be revealed if one braves to stare into it. I have heard of walls having ears, but here it appears that mirrors have eyes. Or is it some part of the speaker's mind speaking as the mirror? Whatever, there is something in us that sees beyond all of our perceptions. It does not "cater to vanities," but knows the truth. We may see, as Paul said, through a glass, darkly, but this glass sees us face to face.

Thank you John for your insightful comment on this piece. The mirror is a reflection of our soul if we look deep enough into its glass. For we cannot hide from our minds eye who we truly are, and at times it whispers back to us our frailties and hidden truths. I remember years ago watching my mother ready herself to go out with friends to a night club. She sat at her mirror putting on her makeup and combing her hair as she hummed a song. There was a satisfied smile on her face which slowly began to melt away into a sorrowful profound sadness. What did the mirror tell her? What was whispered to her to bring such sadness. What truth was revealed? For it did not cater toward her vanity that night. I wish I knew. Perhaps some secrets are best left unrevealed. Thank you again my friend.
