the company we keep

the company we keep

A Poem by Kara Emily Krantz

I want to surround myself with strong, soulful people.

People who use words like 'goodness' and 'truth' in

everyday conversation.

Individuals who believe that integrity is not a matter of pride

but of purpose

and what we do when no one is watching

defines who we are.

I need those who not only understand that life

is filled with music

(but hear it, too):

the sweet soft sounds of the soul.

This is what keeps them breathing

(their hearts beating)

and when they hug me...

I feel a little closer

to the Truth.

I want people who smile even when there is pain

and who attribute the rain

to the pursuit of the colors

within the earth.

Individuals of character and mirth

who laugh from deep inside their selves.

I want to be near people who believe in letting go

(in letting feelings show)

and who will never compromise the beauty

that their hearts

only know.

So if you sit beside my hearth

I will light this fire

(for you and me)

For I wish to surround myself

with Authenticity.

Forgive me

if I take your hand

and press it to my palm.

For your beauty is the balm

my soul has been seeking.

Beautiful... I want to believe this can be so much more than a poetic expression. Your words flow so clearly from your spirit, like a mountain spring, yet I know your desire is not an easy one to see fulfilled. (I usually have so much to say, but your words have driven me too deep into my own restless soul that I will only confess, when you find such people of inspiration and grace I only hope you will find me somewhere in that crowd...)

Beautiful poem. If we all felt this way and strove for these values we wouldn't see the suffering and hate that seems to be exploding in the world.

You express it so well.

" what we do when know ones watching....."
Thats a great line.
I love the little internal rhymes in this, and the message as well.
The story goes that when you start looking for truth and honesty, it comes to you in all forms.

I hope you are surrounded with the spirit and truth you seek

Very good poem
Nice work

I think that many people will be able to relate to this piece, for we are all seeking a place where we can feel that we belong, where conversation is honest and open, and people don't judge solely on materialistic elements. The problem is, it can be so hard to make the first move [lest ye be judged and all that...]

You've expressed thoroughly here your desire for that comfort and wisdom found in others, and i as a reader appreciated the time you took to explain in depth what it is you need.
According to the end, you've/your narrator has found at least one person who projects these qualities, and the gratitude for this is made clear.

I liked:

"Individuals who believe that...//what we do when no one is watching//defines who we are."

It takes more effort to exude goodness without an audience; particularly since people tend to be their own harshest critics.

Great work.
I enjoyed this a lot.

Kara, that was awesome. I found myself nodding and saying, "Yup" after each stanza. I also like how you capitalized the T in Truth. I once took a Rhetorical Criticism class and we spent a lot of time talking about Truth with a capital T. Other people's definitions of their truth is very interesting. But in this piece, you define your Truth and put it out there for everyone to see. That helps finding others with similar Truth. Anyway.

This is a fantastic piece. Great write and thanks for sharing.

I can relate to this piece a lot. Its great to see that other people appreciate the subtle, intense beauty of the world (hows that for an oxymoron!)

This is so true and well done,
reminds of another line of yours, 'the world is alive with secret, inner frequencies'
I hear it, and I hear your music, those 'sweet soft sounds of the soul'. Good allit. there too.
'For your beauty is the balm, my soul has been seeking' Love that
