Amel got his demon powers at age eight. That makes him rather strong in the demon sense. He had to grow up really fast at the age of sixteen. He was in a car crash with his parents. They were both killed. He, with the help of his godfather) raised his younger brother, Maki. 

Amel had dropped out of school after the death of their godfather. He was in his senior year but he couldn't keep his school work up and try to balance three jobs at once to make ends meet.
