Lakota Lullaby and a prayer.

Lakota Lullaby and a prayer.

A Poem by Coyote Poetry
"

Time to learn. We must lead with concern, kindness and love. Before we cannot.

"

December morning…

The days of December are here.

Kind earth is resting and we must become Winter people.

The fire are burning and

grandfathers must become the story tellers.

He must entice the children to listen,

maybe learn?

He told the children of a great people,

who lived in the forest,

only took from kind nature,

what would be used.

He had showed the great waterfall in the Summer,

he reminded the child.

The powerful waterfall,

like us, always moving forward.

Always brave.

He reminded them of the long river.

He told the children.

We are like the river.

Running toward the big water.

We are like the river,

unstoppable spirits without walls or barriers to stop our dreams.

You must know who you are and where you came from.

The grandfather saw the children eyes and the wanted into run into the forest.

He told them.

We were free people once and we are still free people.

befriend the bear, pray to the hawk and the eagle.

Be wise like the coyote and know your terrain like the wolf.

Go to the forest my grandchildren.

He watched them vanish into the vast trees and he prayed.

Please Great Spirit. Send the gift of calm and peace.

Old earth need to learn.

We are one people and one earth.

We must shared the land and be kind to her.

For the sake of every child who dances upon the earth.

Pure poetic beauty dear Coyote! Your Lakota Lullaby and a prayer” teaches us as the grandfather teaches the children, to honor the earth and sky and forest and wind and water- it teaches us the value of these things and of our lives. The language used is graceful, noble and eloquent. I will save this, read it to my own grandchildren and tell them about you my friend. Thank you so much for writing it.

If only grandparents the world over would teach these things to the children, there is no substitute for the wise words of elders .... a beautiful poem my friend.

Comes across like an ancient legend, the picture of a tribal elder teaching lessons of truth to the young. Watching them disperse into the forest, he implores the "Great Spirit" to send the gift of calm and peace. I sincerely hope the GS is listening and feeling generous. This country, this world, could really do with some calm and peace right now.

Hello my friend and thank you for reading and the comment. I pray we can seek peace over war.
Lovely story, very spiritual; I believe you are saying that like the River, we are free to run and catch our dreams. We are also one with the earth and we must respect her; only take from her what you need and no more. And, lastly great spirit, give us calm and peace . Well done!
Best,Betty

Very true!
You are the best at the cafe for telling a story that sounds authentically Native. I'm sorry to interrupt your graceful depiction of December, but I must say we nearly hit 4000 covid deaths in one day yesterday in the USA -- that's one third of all global fatalities. We do need some lessons as you mention. It makes me sad nobody acknowledges this death toll, which marches upward daily, yet they b***h about every other trivial political fart in the wind. Pardon my jadedness. Your poem is a breath of freshness in a stale cave (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
