City Of Lights

City Of Lights

A Poem by Giulia King

. . .

It's 2 am and she's wide awake.
Staring at the moonlight,
coming in from her windowpane.
Her mind is racing and her thoughts are haunting her.
He's always in her head at night.

Outside, there's a city of lights and noise.
The flatiron building, standing tall and gracious.
She always felt like that building,
but never told anyone.
How can you feel like a building?
It's a thing, she shrugged to the thought of it.
But it stands so tall and it's weird, like her.

Out there, girls were walking home in their stilettos.
Making that click click sound on the pavement,
and laughing about the nights festivities.
People were shouting for "Taxi!"
Others were arguing about the noise.
I want to live a life like that.
I want to be out there.. living a life worth writing about. She thought.

"Can't sleep?"
"There's too much noise outside. What are people doing outside in this hour?"
"Lost souls never sleep during the night.
They are always out there, enjoying the darkness." He said.
I guess I too belong out there.
"You belong in a museum."
"You are art.
A piece of artwork, I can stare at forever.
I always find new colors and curves of your mind that I fall in love with." The voice said.
She went numb, startled at the voice that told her all the right things.
It's you.
"Your mind is like an ocean of secrets" He said.
She was so tangled in the lie, she started to believe in it in the end.

Fluid writing really lovely! I have a deep affection for your fine city having called Brooklyn home for a while my younger sister now lives there in the Bronx. I enjoyed the use of metaphor here very refreshing. It's easy to loose ones self in the chaos and noise but we only ever need to be us...that means accepting and embracing every beautiful, dark, awkward distinction. R xo

There is so much in this poem...first, i love the picture. I've never lived in a city and honestly, i'm a little afraid of them but there is something about them that draws my attention.

The poem is great. I really enjoyed it. I got a feeling of being trapped, and a feeling of being afraid and a feeling of wanting to be apart of it all: all mixed with a feeling of insecurity. maybe i'm totally wrong but that's what i saw.

Nicely done, Gullia. As a student of architecture and structural steel many years ago, I have a love for old buildings, and the Flatiron is one such design, unique and beautiful. Well written.

Thank you, Ted! I have a love for old buildings as well :)
I think its about making it big and not getting torn down by those who cant. That Skyscraper has been there since 1966.

Exactly, thanks for dropping by.
Of all the "big" buildings in New York, the flatiron is the most human. I appreciated that line.

I very much enjoyed this piece! I need help tho in the end.
I love how she relates herself to the building. Like the building she stands watching wanting to be apart of the so called seen fun but only observes.
The voice in her head is interesting that it holds her hostage. If it were her own thoughts holding her back It would carry a different tone but it's a male voice. I also considered the voice like reason telling her that although the night life looks fun there is more to life for her than that but you end it with she begins to believe the lies in the end.
When I first read it I didn't read his words as negative but as encouraging. Like she was meant for better things. To believe in herself.
And his words translating her thoughts of being like the building. The build different yet beautiful.
Why are these things lies?
Love it just need help,

Beautiful flow like the magnificent city you live in your words have a hum a buzz! Beautifully woven storytelling my friend with some outstanding lines and the metaphor is clever and thoughtful. We must always be ourselves, and the things we find beautiful in ourselves weird or quirky are our truths. Fine writing lovely! Starz x

Everything is as much real as we think it is. I like the analogy of a building, which is beyond feelings, emotions and reactions. Like an observer. Isn't that many of them whom you look out of the window could be feeling the same or even more bizarre in their inner world. I think that everybody is lost in someway or the other and trying different ways and means to find their direction. It is a nice piece in a conversational tone.

What you believe about yourself, are what you dream another would believe to be true too. But all too often they're just words that sound pretty. Just because another lied, doesn't negate the truth of those beautiful things, in you.
