Love as I See It

This grew out of some discussion I've had in the past few days about the nature of love.

Some say true love doesn’t exist.

Some speak of it as a sweet, but quaint,

Outdated notion.

 

Some speak of love as a disease

An addiction

A codependent trap

In which we lose ourselves

Until there’s no longer a “me,” only “we.”

 

Some are looking for someone to “complete” them.

Others say love is the union of two already “complete” souls.

I say we shouldn’t overthink it.

I say if we wait to be self-actualized,

We’ll wait forever; at least I would!

 

We won’t know the joy of a love

That allows for give and take

For compromise

That gives both space to grow,

Because if you give just a little of yourself

You can get so much in return.

 

We won’t know the pleasure of having someone

Who knows us intimately and accepts us anyway,

Makes us feel secure,

The simple joy of having a companion

To share the good things in life.

Yes, you're absolutely right. Love's a sharing of "good" things in life. It shares both pain and pleasure; heat of spring & coldness of winter; emotions of heart & tears of eyes; faith in compassion & belief in "true-lies"... which're utmost truth, but still they ain't find it. I appreciate the reading and review! I read such negative poetry, etc., about love, and heard people overthink it and speak of it almost as something to be feared and avoided, that I thought a rebuttal was in order.

Love is a beautiful thing but can also come hand in hand with sadness and pain. I think that's why you find such negative poetry about love haha :) x

Unfortunately, yes, that negative side exists. I'm lucky not to have experienced it in a LONG time, though.

This would be a practical, grown up view of love. If you are lucky enough to find someone who feels the same, grab him/her and never let go.

"Practical" and "grown up" are apt. It just occurred to me that in a way this is the opposite of a poet's typical portrayal of love, which is often so tempestuous.

"Love" the small word is an enigma of all time. It is never defined yet we all feel its presence like we feel the presence of the wind.

I told my kids. Slow and easy. Know the person and understand. People won't change. If you get somebody. This is what you have forever. Love need to be dates, conversation and sharing dreams. I like the logic in your words. A good companion and friend is worth more than gold. Thank you for sharing the excellent poem.
