Don't Screw It Up

Don't Screw It Up

A Chapter by Mike Cole

T-minus two hours till graduation

Having already been accepted to every top medical school in the country

He was still unfulfilled

His parents come into town to watch his graduation

Celebrate his accomplishment

They watch him walk on stage

So proud

“And son don’t screw it up”

He walks on stage

Grabs his diploma

Can no longer take the pressure

Sprints to the bathroom

His father follows after

Arthur takes out a pill from his pocket

Eager to pop it into his mouth

As his father walks through the doors

“Oh I didn’t know you took oxy as well”

“Arthur when I take it, it is like an escape from reality”

“Like father like son I always say”

Arthur enrages throws the pill container at his father

“You think this is normal”

“Am I supposed to be this miserable my whole life”

“What is wrong with you?”

His father gathered himself

“Son it is an escape”

“Important people like you and me”

“We need a break from those less superior”

“We are gods among men Arthur”

“Once you are a doctor”

“You can take my place on top of the world”

Arthur turned his face to his father

“Is that what you think we are?”

“Better than everyone else just due to money and power”

“Who are you?”

“You know what I’m tired of trying to be like you”

“You want this type of life?”

“I am through with you”

read it all in one sitting, finally got a good solid chance to devote to seeing this through, I wanted to give this the respect it deserves. At first I was a little thrown pitch by the poetry format, but then the imagery made it flow rather nicely. I love the message in this very much, and I enjoyed the unique approach to the delivery. It's a highly relatable story for many, and a potentially eye opening one for others, which I like. well done!
