Chapter 3: The Rookie

I.O.S.O. HQ, London, August 17, 1895, 7:56am

  Shannon had finally arrived to his first day at the I.O.S.O. Standing in front of the department doors, anxiety fills him to the bone. He takes a deep breath, he clears his mind. Before he enters, he puts out his wallet, pulls out a picture of him and his wife, trying to hold back a tear. He puts back the picture into his wallet, and the wallet to his pocket... Shannon quietly said,

"Alright, I'm ready... This one's for Jillian and for the world's safety" He takes another deep breath and said, "I can do this!" 

  He opens the door with both arms. Busy officers and other personnel stops for awhile and stares at Shannon. An awkward silence ensues and Shannon, stunned with his arms raised. A thought occurs to him that surely, he is to say something to the silent crowd. Finally he begins to open his mouth and said,

"Um... Okaaay... I'll just be going to the Chief's office..." he begins to stammer and says "I-I.. I'm new here... By the way..." 

  He then rushed to the Chief's office and without knocking, Shannon barged in and slammed the door behind him. Chief Hinderson stared at Shannon momentarily...

Chief Hinderson then said, "Ah, Shannon, you are early today, lad! I say, a nice entry you had there"

Shannon answered, "Apologies. Things got a little...awkward back there" 

So the chief said, "Now, don't worry about it. Things get awkward for the new ones, sometimes. So let's get to business then, Mr. Sommerset! Take a seat."

Shannon did as he's told and began to discuss their matter. But as they were about to start, the alarm rings! An officer rushes in and says, "SIR! The mayor of Cambridge got murdered. The body was discovered in his living room!"

The chief quickly stands up and orders, "Call Jenkins! I need him ASAP"

"YES SIR!" The officer answered...

Jenkins enters the chief's office and reports, "Jenkins, reporting for duty, sir!"

As the chief acknowledges, he goes directly to Jenkins' assignment. "Jenkins, objective is to investigate the estate of the mayor of Liverpool and bring back to me any evidence, stat!" He looks to Shannon and says, "Well, Mr. Sommerset, this is your first day on the job! You'll be partnered with Jenkins...in the meantime. We can discuss our matters at a different time. Dismissed."

"Yes, sir!" said Shannon and Jenkins. Afterwards, they rush outside, got inside their car and rushed to the mayor's house with sirens wailing across the streets of London...
