Not Quite a Masterpiece

Not Quite a Masterpiece

A Chapter by Nathan Weaver
"

Nathan bounces his idea off David.

DAVID’S HOUSE, DAYTIME. NATHAN ENTERS.

DAVID
So, what’s up Nathan? What’s this great idea you have?

NATHAN
You remember that TV series we did a few years ago?

DAVID
Refresh my memory.

NATHAN
Going Nowhere?

DAVID
Oh, yeah… vaguely.

NATHAN
I was thinking we could do a second season. That was a really good show.

DAVID
Didn’t Johnny Mello write that series? He’s got such a unique way of writing, there’s really no way we could mimic it.

NATHAN
Well, I wrote some of it, too.

DAVID
Really? How much?

NATHAN
Well… you know, it’s hard to say… maybe 10% of the sketches.

DAVID
Really, 10%?

NATHAN
Well, no, it was more like 6%. But, anyway…

DAVID
I’m not sure it’s a good idea, Nathan.

NATHAN
Why not?

DAVID
Well, for starters, you and I are the only original members of the cast still around to do it.

NATHAN
Minor detail. Besides, like nobody watched the first season anyway.

DAVID
True.

NATHAN
Especially since the incident.

DAVID
Yeah… umm, whatever happened with that series anyway? My memory is a little hazy.

NATHAN
We only edited the first two episodes; it was canned after the pilot aired. Supposedly, it wasn’t funny or something, but we know better than that, right?

DAVID
Well, Nathan, as good as an idea as this sounds. I’m thinking maybe we should… not.

NATHAN
Why not? Did we not have a blast filming the first season? Wasn’t it great?

DAVID
Yeah, wait a minute; we filmed the entire first season. Whatever became of the footage?

NATHAN
It’s on my shelf at home.

DAVID
Collecting dust?

NATHAN
More or less.

DAVID
Well, maybe, instead of filming an entire second season to a series that never aired the entire first season maybe we should just edit the first season’s footage. Seems odd to film a second season of a series that hasn’t even aired its first season.

NATHAN
David… you can’t harp on the past, you gotta move forward! Press on! Live in the now, not the yester-now.

DAVID
I still think it’s a bad idea, Nathan.

NATHAN
Well, we’ll see about that. But, I gotta run. Gotta get to work.

DAVID
By the way, how’s your wife doing?

NATHAN
Crystal?

DAVID
You know, you only have one wife. You don’t have to say her name.

NATHAN
She’s good.

DAVID
I just hadn’t seen her in a while and was wondering what was up.

NATHAN
She’s just busy… work, ya know.

DAVID
Sure, tell her something awkward for me.

NATHAN
Will do. Laters.

DAVID
See ya.

I don't understand what David is talking about. The second season is always better than the first anyways.
