These Things

These Things

A Poem by Seriana

These Things

I sit in the quiet,

watching the riot of the fan blades blow,

spinning with spiraling, radial force,

of course.

I hear the rattle of something...semi-distant,

as the luxury of a modern AC unit kicks in.

I think of things,

(not these...)

things that weren’t here.

In this moment with a heating pad against an aching back,

with ice-lined sore feet...

a blanched balance bound by cold,

and heat,

calms the weary nerves in between.

Then the things,

(not these things)

but the ones to do in my head,

the list of forevers comes to the front,

forward in memoriam,

as eyes lose focus for a moment (or more...)

The tightness of the clamp holding my hair digs in,

reminding,

snapping thoughts back to present,

to things, (not these things)

and my locks let loose,

dangling in a relaxed mess upon my shoulders,

reminding it’s still sultry summer.

Another thought occurs...

one of a young man whom I adored for a few moments,

darling smile,

gentle hands and soft lips...

sweet scent of youth left to wonder of such things,

these things,

his place in another extrinsic space...and I’m lost in him....

for a breath only,

then,

wonderment begins anew,

as I hear the muffled footsteps of wee ones,

next door to the floor I walk upon oft.

I do.

Wonder at such things,

these things that are not,

but once were,

a long time before the we,

and the us,

and the I,

Alone.

I’m left with the feels that feel deep,

rooted impressions in these things.

Things that grab hold for a bold moment afore the change,

and they’re gone.

These things,

subtle things,

my things.

...

Our memories, whether good or bad are such a part of us. Thankfully the pleasant ones are the easiest to remember. The trying ones are those we wish to forget yet at the most importune time they reappear and if we want to or not they remain alive in our mind.

This is very subtle, very lovely and sweet. It stirs the emotions and memories in the reader...something delicate, something lost and longed for, never to return; like youth perhaps or innocence, a babe's tiny hand curled around a finger, a puppy's breath nuzzling your cheek playfully. I like the way you lay claim to the memories and emotions. These are your things, and they belong to nobody else. Yet, we share them with you here in your poetry. I very much enjoyed the read.

This one really does throw you into your own thoughts! As I was reading, I felt myself thinking deeply too. It's strange how we can have one thought or opinion on something, and then the next day it entirely flips! I really loved the touch with the AC. It adds this nostalgic, longing factor to it. This poem has the feeling of thinking and missing something, wanting it back but you keep forcing yourself to snap back into the present. Beautifully wrote and worded. Thank you for sharing!

Amen Dale! Thanks for the review
Those moments in the past when they visit when we least expect it and we get lost in the memory of how delicious they were. And then they are gone. But they are your memories and they are your precious and no one else can own those moments, only you. I can relate to this Amber. Visually pleasing and sensual. So nicely conveyed.

Has the sound of longing for that which no longer is. It is a normal tendency, but one which, engaged in too frequently, only brings pain. Once the past was now, someday the future will be now, but both of these are phantoms. Only now, this moment, is real. Seize it.

For a brief moment lost in thought to time before…

We could have these thoughts on so many things and often we do. Life ever changing rearranging ever shifting.
