you don't own this day (for the Black Valentine's poetry challenge)

the fourteenth of two;
who is counting
but you --

married on this day,
it seemed like a good idea
at the time.

open the box of
chocolates
where maggots reside,

there never was an us,
only a you
and me.

flowers were for days
you cheated
and lied.

the fourteenth
just another day,
my love for you
died.

Weirdly, I don't have regrets about it being my wedding day. What came after, well, there are many regrets. Thank you.

You're welcome. Regrets are lead weights on our hearts. We have to let go and move on. I wish it was an easy thing to do… that it was as easy to let go of pain as it is to recognize the need to do so.

Definitely a rendering of a dark 14th. A good idea at the time...so many good ideas can't stand the test of time. Candy and cards and flowers galore, I tossed them away when you walked out the door. Sad my friend.

Sad and strangely liberating. I found out something interesting. Tying a holiday to an anniversary you would rather forget ain't so bad. At least it's not a random day in the calendar, unconnected to anything else. Strangely, it isn't so bad. Moving on, taking back the day. I buy my own flowers now, when I want, the kind I want. They are for me.
